LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Aug. 26)-In the home opener, the New Mexico State soccer team defeated Prairie View A&M, 4-0, for its first victory of the season. The Aggies had four freshmen score their first career goals in the match.

NM State improved to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 0-2-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wosick recorded her first shutout of the season in the win. The Aggie offense controlled the ball throughout the game and out-shot the Panthers, 28-2.

"I'm excited about getting the win," head coach Blair Quinn said. "There are some things we still need to clean up. We had a lot of shots and all four goals were scored by freshmen and that's awesome."

The Aggies set the tone of the match early with a quick score. Freshman midfielder Bree Luhrsen recorded her first career goal to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead after tapping the ball around freshman goalkeeper Bianca Garza during the 12th minute of action.

NM State added another score when junior defender Megan Hendler found freshman midfielder Katie Smith, who sailed a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards away in the 17th minute. The goal was Smith's first as an Aggie, and the Crimson and White had a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, freshman forward Katelynn Tupponce gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead when she chipped a ball over Garza's head in the 86th minute.

NM State kept the pressure on and scored their final goal in the 87th minute. Freshman forward Jennae Cambra drove a ball into the back of the right corner of the net from 10 yards away. Junior forward Yolanda McMillion recorded assists on both of the second half goals.

NM State continues its home stand against Houston Baptist, Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. inside Aggie Memorial Stadium.
