Lady Panthers lose Two Matches in Spikefest Tournament
South Carolina State proved to be too much for Claflin in the Spikefest Tournament winning the match in straight sets, 25-16, 25-16 25-18. The Lady Panthers seemed to be unable to get into any type of rhythm the entire match. South Carolina State controlled the tempo and cruised to the three set victory.
South Carolina State was led by Desiree Waller with a game high 10 kills, Shabree Roberson nine kills, and Elizabeth Webb with six kills. Bria Brimmer directed the offense with 29 assists. Defensively Brendell Studnicka recorded 11 digs, while Waller added 10 digs.
The Lady Panthers were led offensively by Freshman Chelcey Foster and Faith Simmons with three kills each. Kathrin Fischer was credited with nine assists. Defensively Freshman Courtney Person had 10 digs.
Later, Alabama State (1-5) earned their first win of the season with a straight set (25-17, 25-18, 25-11) victory over Claflin University (0-2).
Asia Manning led the Lady Yellow Jackets offensively with a game high 14 kills, and Maya Bell recorded eight service aces, while Ana Pego, dished out 25 assists. Defensively Luiza Griz collected 12 digs.
Claflin was led by Lydia Wise with nine kills, Lauren Calvin seven kills, and Faith Simmons with seven kills. Kathrin Fischer dished out 23 assists. On the defensive side Courtney Person was credited with seven digs.
Claflin will try to get their first win of the young season tomorrow in the second day of the Spikefest Tournament, at 1:00pm against The Citadel.
