MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- The Alabama State University football team wrapped up its second consecutive night practice at Hornet Stadium Wednesday in preparation for Saturday's season opener at Mississippi Valley State.
"It was good, another good, energetic practice," head coach Reggie Barlow said. "We have a lot of young players at positions and they need to just play, knowing we have confidence in them. We got a lot of specific game situational preparation in all facets, especially special teams, as well as goal line and red zone work. We covered a lot of areas and were able to get it all done."
For the first time this fall, there is a specific "end" of the week, with gameday less than three days away for the Hornets. Barlow said he senses the players know it's a different week and a different time.
"I think the players understand," Barlow said. "The fact they are seeing 'cards' and scout teams tells them that it's not ordinary practice now. It's specific for Mississippi Valley State. The focus is there. I see them understanding this is a big game and this is the first game. We want to leave no doubt. We want to go and play well. I see the focus from our older players and they are spreading it to the younger players."
