Lowvilles Haenlin dedicated toward soccer

Lowvilles Haenlin dedicated toward soccer
Posted By: HBCU Connect Sports on September 18, 2011

LOWVILLE Taylor Haenlin has been working toward her goal of playing Division I soccer at Syracuse University since she was in sixth grade.

Now that the Lowville senior is verbally committed to play for the Orange next fall, Haenlin can concentrate on putting the finishing touches on what has been an extraordinary high school career.

Haenlin, who splits time between forward and midfield, has been on the Times All-North first team in each of her four varsity seasons, and was a first-team all-state selection last year when she scored 16 goals and assisted on 11. But entering her senior season, Haenlins only concern is with taking the Red Raiders as far into the postseason as she possibly can.

Every year, we always try to make the sectional final, Haenlin said. We always set a goal to keep playing into November.

Haenlin will lead a group with nine returning seniors from one of the leagues strongest teams last season. Haenlin said, in addition to making a run in sectionals and possibly states, the team is focused on taking the B Division back from last years champion, South Jefferson.

I think were all really excited this year, Haenlin said. We all have a central goal, and I think that helps a lot.

Even though Haenlin has unfinished business in the Frontier League, she cant help but look forward to playing for the Orange.

Haenlin first contacted Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon via email when she was in ninth grade.

Ive always wanted to go to Syracuse since I was little, Haenlin said. So Im excited it actually happened.

Haenlin said that Wheddon got back to her shortly after she reached out, and from that point on, Haenlin was on the coachs radar.

I would talk to the coach on the phone and see what I needed to work on, Haenlin said. Then I would try to go out and do that during games while he was there to prove that I could actually do it.

Lowville coach Leo Sammon believes that Haenlins success has been a result of her year-round soccer schedule.

Haenlin plays club soccer for Empire United out of Syracuse, which is part of a league that includes the top 16 travel teams in the nation. Haenlin practices for Empire three days per week in the high school offseason, and travels to tournaments just about every weekend. Haenlin has played in Las Vegas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and various other places throughout the country.

Haenlin has also gained national exposure by playing in training camps for the Olympic Development Program since she was in sixth grade.

Obviously she has a lot of natural ability, but shes decided this is what she wanted to do, Sammon said. There are a lot of kids with natural ability that dont dedicate themselves to it, and shes dedicated herself to this. Shes sacrificed a lot.

Haenlin will be the third Red Raider to play Division I soccer in Sammons tenure.

Lowville is one of 15 teams in the league scheduled to begin regular-season play today when it hosts General Brown at 4:30 p.m.

Here is a look at the rest of the Frontier League teams:

A Division

Outlook: Much like the last several years, Immaculate Heart and Watertown enter the season as the favorites to control the A Division. Both teams lost key scorers to graduation, but coaches around the league believe that each school has the pieces in place for another strong year. The Cavaliers will look to Erin McClusky and Christine Wright to lead a talented team with limited varsity experience, while the Cyclones will need production from their three fourth-year seniors, Jillian VanNostrand, Sarah VanEenenaam, and Mia Capone. Indian River will be without Morgan Nabywaniec, as the junior will miss the season with a knee injury. But the Warriors have one of the largest rosters in the league, and plenty of experience with 11 seniors. Carthage is young overall, but has four experienced seniors in key positions with Val McGuire in goal, Alyssa Kidder at midfield, and the duo of Chrissy Cook and Meghan Serota at forward.

B Division

Outlook: Lowville is considered the favorite in the B Division, as the Red Raiders return most of the key components from last years 12-win team. South Jefferson, the defending regular season and playoff champions, lost six starters from last years squad. Coach Terry Burgess said that the goal for this season is to reach .500, and at least compete with the stronger teams in the league. Altmar-Parish-Williamstown has an athletic group, but one that lacks varsity experience. The Rebels hopes of contending will likely fall on the shoulders of senior forward Megan Phillips. General Brown has 10 returning players, and a talented group moving up from junior varsity. Third-year coach Stephanie Doney expects an improvement upon last years total of three wins.

C Division

Outlook: The C Division should be wide open. Sandy Creek is young, but has the most returning first-team league all-star selections in the division, they include Bree Warner, Chelsea Claflin and Kylie Hanni. Thousand Islands coach Tim Filiatrault referred to this season as a re-building year, but said the Vikings still expect to compete for the division title. South Lewis lost several key players from last years squad which won the regular season championship, but should get a strong senior season out of Jayne Strigle. Tracy Adams will take over as the head coach at Beaver River, and expects a good year out of her senior group, which should help the Beavers be more competitive than they were last season.

Beaver River Beavers

Coach: Tracy Adams (1st year).

2010 record: 2-12-2.

Roster: Megan Bush (Sr.), Cristen Davis (Sr.), Brionna Farney (Sr.), Sam Hawksley (sr.), Alyssa Hulbert (Sr.), Rachel Updike (Sr.), Shayna Farney (Jr.), Gen Fidler (Jr.), Monica Interiano (Jr.), Faylo Kennedy (Jr.), Cheyenne Lee (Jr.), Emmalee Ritz (Jr.), Lillia Wooschlager (Jr.), Taylor Buell (So.), Madison Compton (So.), Malori Mattimore (So.), Brittany Widrick (So.).

Thousand Islands Vikings

Coach: Tim Filiatrault (6th year).

2010 record: 6-8-3, 6-7-3.

Players to watch: Brook Garrett, Allison Westcott.

Roster: Toni Wahl (Jr.), Ashley Howard (So.), Aliceson Cornaire (Fr.), Allie Barton (Jr.), Allison Westcott (Sr.), Keelin Delaney (So.), Melinda Knapp (So.), Kerstin Phelps (So.), Kristin Farmer (Sr.), Morgan Robbins (So.), Rendi Merchant (Sr.), Kristen Glass (Jr.), Dana Flanders (Sr.), Makayla Hirst (Sr.), Kristianne Shaffer (Jr.), Missy Fulton (Jr.), Brook Garrett (Jr.), Gaby Rios (Sr.), Chloe Mason (Jr.).

D Division

Outlook: Copenhagen, the defending regular season and playoff champion, advanced farther than any team in the league last season with a trip to the Section 3 Class D finals. But several of the players that led the Golden Knights to that point have graduated, and this years squad has nine players that are either in the freshman or 8th-grade class. Lyme, last years runner-up, returns several talanted scorers including Audrey Schwind, Brianna Sharlow, and Shayla Fulmer. The Indians do lack experience defensively, however, with their biggest loss being starting goalie Alex Weston to graduation. Belleville Henderson should be in the title mix with nine returning seniors, and a deep roster due to the school cutting the junior varsity program. Alexandria has several underclassmen to go with a strong group of five seniors. Coach Diane Bush has her sights set on qualifying for the league playoffs, and making a run in sectionals. Sackets Harbor will need a big season from third-year senior Olivia Kolb in order to compete.

Alexandria Purple Ghosts

Coach: Diane Bush (6th year).

2010 record: 4-7-4, 4-6-4.

Roster: Jordan Bush (Sr.), Lauren VanCour (Sr.), Jordan Papin (Sr.), DaKota Kernnehan (Sr.), Annie Griswold (Sr.), Kristen Swart (Jr.), Sari Rufa (Jr.), Rachel Calhoun (Jr.), Amanda Lingenfelter (So.), Tisha Aikins (So.), Somer Umstead (So.), Mikaela Benny (Fr.), Molly Aznoe (Fr.), Hannah Lynch (Fr.), Kiah Hudon (Fr.), Jarah Papin (Fr.), Morgan Weaver (8th), Emma Kearns (8th).
