Locals in college: Pelton, Heinsohn help Generals
|
Posted By: HBCU Connect Sports on September 17, 2011 Washington[1] & Lee got its 2011 campaign off to a solid start taking down Franklin[2] & Marshall[3] 24-10 on Saturday and used contributions along the way from a couple of former Central Virginia prep stars. I think we played really well, said defensive back[4] Jake Pelton[5], a Monticello[6] High graduate. I think the biggest change this year from last year is the attitude, The Generals held a 7-3 lead at halftime, only to dominate in the second half to secure the victory. We were a young team last year, Pelton[7] added. Everyone is more mature this year. I think we have leaders on the team in the senior class and the junior class. We made plays. We had people that stepped up that didnt step up last year. Covenant alumnus Luke Heinsohn[8], who rushed for 1,321 yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago, finished Saturdays contest with 26 yards on eight carries. The running back[9] sprained his ankle two weeks ago in a scrimmage. I hadnt practiced all week, he said. Id been elevating and icing; it was sort of a game-time decision. I felt pretty good, the ankle felt good enough to go. I dont like coming off the field as much as I did, like any competitor. Washington& Lee (1-0) had eight penalties for 108 yards. That is definitely something we've got to clean up if we want to stay competitive, Heinsohn[10] said. We can't have that. But, I think that's more first-game jitters. It was a pretty chippy game. Pelton[11] finished with three tackles and a pass breakup. "I played OK," he said. "I think it's a testament to the team that I didn't have 11 or 12 tackles at safety. We had plays being made on the defensive line. That's a testament to the defense playing more as a unit. We only gave up 10 points, which compared to last year, is great." The Generals will look to move to 2-0 at home against Sewanee[12] on Saturday, and Heinsohn[13] hopes to be back at full strength. I am going to do what I can to get my ankle back to 100 percent, said Heinsohn[14]. I think it was close on Saturday. It feels good right now. Pelton[15] feels that it won't be hard to prepare for the Tigers. "Sewanee[16] is an option team, he said. Our offense here is an option team. We will get a good scout look. We are looking at 10-0 this year. We are not listening to any of the outside sources. It starts and ends with the 11 guys on the field and we are going to keep that mindset, and it's going to take us far." Brad Starks[17] (Orange County): West Virginia[18] overcame an early 7-0 deficit to come back and defeat in-state rival Marshall, giving Dana Holgorsen[19] a 34-13 victory in his debut as head coach[20]. Starks[21] finished the game with one catch for 11 yards. The Mountaineers (1-0) will host Norfolk State on Saturday. Takeem Hedgeman[22] (Monticello): Now the starting running back[23] for Norfolk State, the former Mustang finished with 65 yards on 12 carries as the SpartansdominatedVirginia State 37-3 over the weekend. The junior also had four catches for 39 yards. Norfolk State (1-0) will travel to Morgantown[24] on Saturday to take on Starks[25] and West Virginia[26]. Mike Brown (Monticello): Libertys starting signal caller had a chance to shock the ACC, as the Flames traveled to Raleigh[27] to take on North Carolina State. However, three interceptions doomed the team as the Wolfpack downed Liberty 43-21. Brown[28] went 22 for 39 for 279 yards and a touchdown, in addition to the picks. The dual-threat quarterback[29] also led the team in rushing, earning 77 yards on 20 carries. The Flames (0-1) will look to get their first win of the season on Saturday night at home against Robert Morris[30]. References
