President Obama explains The American Jobs Act at UR's Robins Center
|
Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on September 12, 2011 Within hours after presenting his new jobs bill to Congress, President Barack Obama was on campus at The University of Richmond explaining the package and seeking support. While some have quibbled about the president’s choice of venue, those assembled at Robbins Center seemed more interested in what the president had to say not where he said it. Many had risen early Friday morning and traveled from every part of the city, state and beyond to hear how the Obama Administration planned to get Americans back to work and breathe new life into the nations’ struggling economy. From the reactions of those assembled, the President’s message struck a chord of renewed hope and enthusiasm. After being introduced by Nigel S. Richardson, a student at Richmond Community High School, President Obama emerged from the rotunda to the rousing applause and fanfare of the near capacity crowd. The tremendously charismatic and confident leader of the free world was in excellent spirits and form this day as he rolled out The American Jobs Act – a plan to ease the anxieties of the many Americans who are going through economic hard times and uncertainty about their futures and those of their families. The President, a remarkably perceptive man and political leader, seemed to sense this anxiety and began his remarks by acknowledging the frustration many harbour about the nations’ economy and “what’s going on in Washington”. He spoke of how for many Americans the compact that many had come to rely on – where hard work and responsible decision making are rewarded – was now in serious jeopardy leaving only a sense of acute uncertainty. He promised that this bill would alleviate a lot of the economic pain being experienced and begin the process of restoring the nations’ economy to its historic position of prominence in the world. The broad strokes of the President’s plan would “put more people back to work and put more money in the pockets of working Americans”. More specifically, these results would be accomplished by: · providing tax cuts to small businesses to help them hire and expand now. Also, tax cuts would be available to any business that hires or increases wages. · creating works projects that would put people back to work and at the same time restore the nations’ crumbling infra-structure. These projects would be funded based on need and impact – not politics and earmarks. These program will have the ability to re-employ some 280,000 teachers who have been let go due to state budget reductions, and create scores of jobs for construction workers, first responders, returning veterans and other workers; · expanding job opportunities for hundreds of thousands of low-income youth through a new Pathways Back to Work Fund that would create summer and year round jobs for youth. · developing new job training programs to connect low-income workers to jobs quickly; and adopting programs to encourage employers to hire disadvantaged workers. · extending the unemployment benefits of the long term unemployed to help them support their families while looking for work; creating training programs that build real skills and connect to real jobs and providing a new tax credit to employers who hire workers who have been out of work for over 6 months. · putting more money in the pockets of working and middle class Americans by cutting payroll taxes resulting in a savings of $1,500/$2000 a year, and · revamping the current federal refinancing program (HARP) to help more Americans refinance their mortgages at much lower rates, Lastly but perhaps most importantly when one considers the recent budget debacle, the President’s jobs plan won’t add a dime to the deficit and will be fully paid for through a combination of deficit reductions and closing corporate tax loopholes. As President Obama brought his remarks to a close, the excitement in Robbins Center reached a fever pitch as well-wishers and supporters rushed to the guard rails to shake his hand, snap a photo, or simply to collect that one final visual memory. While only time can gauge how receptive Congress is to the President’s jobs bill, casual observation of those witnessing today’s remarks suggests his jobs plan is the very news many have been waiting to hear.
