Alcorn State Athletics to host several events this week
Alcorn State, MSThe Alcorn State Department of Athletics will host several athletic contests this week on campus beginning with volleyball tonight and ending with football on Saturday, September 17, 2011.
The ASU volleyball squad will host the Golden Lions of UAPB tonight at 6 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium.The Lady Braves are coming off a 3 set (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) loss against Xavier (La.).
On Wednesday, September 14th, Alcorn State will face Nicholls State at 7 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium. Alcorn State Soccer will make their home debut on Thursday, September 15th at 3 pm against Delta State.The Lady Braves are seeking their first victory of the 2011 season.
ASU Football will round out the home contests on Saturday, September 17, 2011.The Braves are set to host the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley at 4 pm.This SWAC Eastern Division Match-up will also serve as High School Senior/Community College Transfer Day.
During halftime of the home opener, Alcorn State will unveil legendary Coach Marino Casem's name onto the stadium.This measure was approved by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institution of Higher Learning after being submitted by Dr. M.
Christopher Brown II. This is a great week for Alcorn State Athletics.I am happy that the Alcorn State family can experience soccer, volleyball and football all in one week.We hope that each contest has tremendous support from the faculty, staff and student body, stated Interim Athletic Director Dr. Malvin Williams[1], Sr. Casem's tenure at Alcorn State University spans over 20 years as he served in the capacity as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director.Coach Casem is also the winningest coach in Alcorn State Football History with a record of 132-65-8, seven SWAC Championships (1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1976, 1979 and 1984) and four National Black College Championships (1968, 1969, 1974, and 1984).
