West Virginia vs. Norfolk State: Halftime Update, Analysis

West Virginia vs. Norfolk State: Halftime Update, Analysis

West Virginia trails the Spartans of Norfolk State 12-10 at halftime.

Many people (including myself) had the Mountaineers as the easy choice to win their conference since they are arguably most talented team in the Big East.

The lack of a ground game has really hurt the Mounties as they have just ran for 39 yards in 15 attempts.

Starting quarterback Geno Smith had some Heisman buzz in the pre-season but he has been on his back for most of the game. Completing 8 of 18 passes for just 104 yards is a bitembarrassingagainst an FCS opponent.

The Spartans have shocked West Virginia for 242 yards and giving up 178 yards passing is a bit alarming for West Virginia's secondary.

There has been three pass plays of 25 yards or longer against the Mountaineers which is shocking since we expected that from Dana Holgorsen's offense.

The amazing stat is the 11 penalties that the Spartans have committed. Most would think that West Virginia would turn most of those into long drive and possible touchdowns, but the ground game has been non-existent.

Look for WV to run the rock a lot more in the second half as they should start to control the line of scrimmage with more ease.

However, if they cannot find a consistent running back this game could go down to the wire.
