WVIAC Football Preview

CHARLESTON--The University of Charleston, like WVU and Marshall, also had weather issues during its first game of the year at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. The Golden Eagles had to sit through a 40-mintue delay due to lightning. Despite being down for most of the game, head coach Pat Kirkland said he was proud of his veteran players for stepping up and taking leadership roles. However, U.C. ended up losing 27-7 in Saturday's contest. The team will now focus on its next opponent, Urbana University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Laidley Field in Charleston.

West Virginia State University will welcome Virginia State Unviersity to town on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Institute. The Yellowjackets lost 64-27 against Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte last Saturday. Head coach Earl Monroe said the defense needs to get better and watch the penalities. The Yellowjackets' offense is led by quarterback Ricky Phillips, who is a Huntington native.
