Area sports briefs: Hornets cruise in opener

Salisburys girls tennis team rolled to a 9-0 win against Central Davidson in a CCC opener played on Wednesday.

Joy Loeblein, Katelyn Storey, Erika Nelson, Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer, Alexandra Drye and Carolina Graham won singles matches for the Hornets (7-1). Doubles winners were Nelson-Loeblein, Storey-Graham and Meyerhoeffer-Drye.

Prep volleyball

Carsons varsity volleyball team beat Providence Grove 26-24, 25-12, 25-20 on Wednesday. The Cougars (10-1, 1-0) play at South Rowan in a big NPC match today.

Carsons jayvees topped the Patriots 25-20, 25-14.

Prep football

The Lexington Dispatch reported that Central Davidson head football coach Mark Hoover has stepped down due to heart-related health concerns. He will remain at CD as a physical education teacher.

Assistant coach Brad Morton is stepping in as head coach.

Jayvee football

Note that tonights Salisbury at South Rowan jayvee football game has an early starting time of 6 p.m.

East Rowan boosters

The next East Rowan Booster Club meeting is on Monday, Sept. 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the library.

Major leagues

Jerry Sands (Catawba) was recalled by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Sands is the frontrunner for L.A.s left field job in 2012.

Middle school softball

West Rowan Middle defeated Corriher-Lipe 17-7 in middle school softball. Khaila Hall had two stolen bases and a hit for the Bulldogs. Hannah Rupard had two hits and two steals. Paije Kistler went 2-for-3 in hitting.

Peyton Greene struck out nine batters for the Bulldogs (2-1), who are at home this afternoon against Mooresville.

Middle school soccer

Sacred Heart defeated reigning champion Hickory Christian 2-1.

Sacred Heart scored first with nice passes from the midfield. Justin Boyd found Joseph Harrison on the edge of the box and he thundered a shot off the bar. Arun Kelly-Rajan pounced on the rebound and scored.

With the scored tied 1-1, a perfect cross from Elane Turnbull found Pedro Cruz in the box. His shot high into the net decided the physical contest.

James Boyd and Rigo Salazar sealed the win with great defense.

College volleyball

Livingstone outside hitter Lakitta Hicks was named CIAA Player of the Week. She had 51 kills, 18 digs and 16 blocks in three games, including a 26-kill effort against Morris.

College golf

Catawbas men finished 13th out of 17 teams in the Kiawah Island Invitational golf tournament. Catawba shot rounds of 316 and 313 629.

Brad Cline led the Indians. He shot 78-73 151 to finish 26th.

College soccer

Catawbas mens soccer team got two goals from Corey Faughnan and three assists from Carson Smith in a 5-1 win against St. Andrews on Wednesday.

Kristen Girardi and Brittany Gibbons (West Rowan) each had a goal and an assist as Catawbas womens soccer team beat Queens 3-1 on Wednesday.

Youth football

The Carolina Panthers announced $1,000 equipment grants to five youth football organizations, including the Salisbury Police Athletic League 49ers, coached by Brian Miller.

Volleyball camp

Homefield Advantage will run fall volleyball for middle school and high school students, not currently playing. Skills will be on Mondays and scrimmages/skills on Wednesdays from 6-7:30. Hurley Y programs

Registration for fall soccer and flag football has been extended until Sept. 10. Coaches are needed.
