Tides belt out finale win
AAA International League: Norfolk defeated South Division champ Durham 8-5 in the teams regular-season finale at Harbor Park. Rhyne Hughes and Brendan Harris hit back-to-back home runs to cap a six-run first inning for the Tides. The Bulls, led by catcher Stephen Vogt -- who batted 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI -- rallied with back-to-back solo home runs in the third and scored again in the top of the fifth before Norfolk tacked on two more runs in the bottom half. Solid fielding by the Tides cemented the win in the ninth.
AA Eastern League: Richmond made the playoffs in remarkable fashion, getting the type of walk-off home run that may never have happened in baseball history. With one out of the top of the eighth inning in Altoona, Pa., the Flying Squirrels' Wes Hodges hit an opposite-field home run that barely cleared the fence in right, making the score 2-1. Literally, before even one more pitch was thrown, heavy rain fell, and the game never was resumed. The Squirrels (76-66) got the victory and edged the Bowie Baysox (75-66) by a half-game, earning the right to face Harrisburg in a best-of-five league semifinal series starting Wednesday in Pennsylvania. If any other result on the last pitch had occurred other than a home run, the Baysox and Squirrels would have been tied at 75-66, perhaps necessitating a one-game playoff between them.
