Tennessee State to the SWAC? Comegy says come on in!

Remember last week when we promised you that wed bring you a story or notebook item on Tennessee State-to-SWAC? Well, we lied. Because of breaking news, we never got the chance to bring it to you in print. So, now, we bring it to you online

Jackson State coach Rick Comegy said hed welcome in Tennessee State to the SWAC if the school decided to join.

TSU, a historically black university based in Nashville, Tenn., and a member of the Division I-AA Ohio Valley Conference since 1986, was extended an invitation to the SWAC last year.

The university will rule on the invitation once a new president is hired, said Teresa Phillips, the schools athletic director.

Phillips said a president might not be named until next year but a decision wont take us a long time to make once a president is announced. I think its something we need to heavily consider, she said.

Tennessee State, which JSU beat 35-29 last week in the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, has played a dozen games against SWAC schools in football over the last five years. Jackson State and Tennessee State have played in football the last 36 years.

Maybe they belong in the SWAC? I know they play schools in the SWAC, Comegy said. It would be good to have them in here. Competition would rise.
