Soccer Hosts Alabama A&M Friday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team has gotten off to a 4-1-1 start, its best since a 5-0 start in 2009. Friday night, the Mocs will host Alabama A&M at Finely Stadium to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule.
SCOUTING THE MOCS (4-1-1, 0-0-0 SoCon)
The Mocs extended their unbeaten streak to four with wins over Stetson and Jacksonville State to claim the Gardner-Web Under Armour Border Classic last weekend. Now 4-1-1 overall, the Mocs are tied with Western Carolina for second in the league standings with just one non-conference match remaining on the schedule. Donna-Kay Henry was named the tournament MVP while Becca Smith, Lauren Wilson and Andria Aurand were named to the all-tournament team. Smith is second in the league in scoring with 12 points and six goals. Her three game winners are a SoCon-best. Freshman Crystal Mackezyk is second on the team in scoring with three goals, ranking third in the SoCon and Henry leads UTC with three assists, second in the league standings. Sophomore Taylor Mangrum leads the SoCon with 7.00 per game, 42 overall, and has a .808 saves percentage. She is tied for the league lead in shutouts with two on the year.

Each loss has been a shutout and Alabama A&M has given up 45 goals through five games. Nycole Henderson leads the team with four of the Bulldogs seven shots. Celeste Roberts has two shots, including the lone on-goal attempt from A&M while Hernedez Haughton is credited with the seventh shot. Keeper Linda Aboagye has started all five matches, playing 409 minutes and has given up all 45 goals. She has recorded 52 saves with a .536 saves percentage and a 9.90 goals against average. Jazmine Mitchell has seen action in just one game, playing 4:49. SMITH TABBED CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior forward Becca Smith was named the SoCon Co-Player of the Week for all matches Sept. 5-11. She scored the equalizer against Stetson then secured the win on a penalty kick in overtime. Against Jacksonville State, she again used a penalty kick to give the Mocs the win and the GWU Tournament title. She was named to the All-Tournament team. MOCS CLAIM BORDER CLASSIC TITLE; HENRY MVP The Mocs defeated Stetson 3-2 in overtime and Jacksonville State 1-0 in regulation to claim the Gardner-Webb Under Armour Border Classic title. Both game winning goals were penalty kicks taken by Becca Smith after Donna-Kay Henry was fouled in the box. Henry was named the MVP while Smith, who scored three goals in the tournament, was named to the all-tournament team. Joining them on the squad was midfielder Lauren Wilson and defender Andria Aurand. MOCS RUN UNBEATEN STREAK TO FOUR STRAIGHT; THIRD-BEST IN LEAGUE After dropping the home opener to Austin Peay, the Mocs have not lost a match in each of their last four tries. UTC came away with a 3-3 draw against Gardner-Webb then went on a three-game tear with shutouts against Lipscomb and Jacksonville State and an overtime win over Stetson. MANGRUM TIES SAVES TOTAL Sophomore keeper Taylor Mangrum leads the SoCon with seven saves per game and is second with 42. She pulled down 18 against Jacksonville State to secure her third career shutout and tied her career-best for a single game. The 18 saves are also the most this season by any Southern Conference team. SMITH TIES, WINS WITH TWO GOALS Junior Becca Smith nailed a game-tying goal from 25 yards out in the 81st minute to secure overtime for the Mocs against Stetson at the GWU Tournament. She followed that with the game-winning penalty kick in the 100th minute after teammate Donna-Kay Henry was taken out by the keeper in the box. SOCCER TEAM GIVES ASSIST The Mocs were up early on Labor Day to help out with the annual FCA 5K Race held at Chattanooga State. The Mocs stood in the pouring rain to help direct the runners along the course and provided water.SMITH RANKS AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS Junior Becca Smith is back to the form she sported as a freshman. After a series of injuries kept her sidelined last season, she has steppd back to the front of the scene in the SoCon. She is second in the league with points (13), points per game (2.17), goals (6) and goals per game (1.0). She leads the league with 24 shots. The Murfreesboro native also ranks second in shots per game averaging 4.00. She has twice scored two goals in a game (Tennessee Tech and Stetson) and has a league-high three game winning goals. HENRY TOP ASSIST GETTER Senior Donna-Kay Henry is generally known for her scoring abilities. As her reputation has spread, her goal scoring opportunities have shrunk, but she hasn't let that stop her. Henry has three assists on the year and leads the Mocs in that category for the first time in her career. She is second in the SoCon and now has 11 for her career, ranking fourth all-time at UTC. Her two assists against Lipscomb tie for the most in a single SoCon game this year. CREW STEPS IN THE MIDDLE Sophomore transfer Kelly Crew was the Rookie of the Year for the Appalachian Athletic Conference a year ago when she played for Tennessee Wesleyan. Through just six games this season, the Aussie is second on the team for assists with two, ranking seventh in the SoCon. MACKEZYK STEPPING UP Freshman Crystal Mackezyk (MY-chek) is playing midfield for the Mocs, but doesn't skimp on the scoring opportunities. The Columbia, Tenn., native has three goals ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS IN THE SOCON Senior Donna-Kay Henry and Becca Smith are ranked among the top active players in the Southern Conference. Henry has 62 career points, good for third while Smith's 44 rank her fifth. Henry has 26 goals, just three off the SoCon leader and Smith has 17, putting her fifth on the list. The pair are listed second and third for shots with Henry's 175 and Smith's 132. Henry has eight game-winning goals placing her fourth on the list, five behind league-leader Martha Hall. Sophomore Taylor Mangrum also enters the SoCon's top five for saves with 140. THREE SCORE IN TIE VS. GARDNER-WEBB Freshman Crystal Mackezyk scored her first collegiate goal for the first of three ties in UTC's game against Gardner-Webb. Junior Lauren Wilson netted her second goal at UTC while junior Becca Smith added another goal for a SoCon-leading three on the year. SMITH NETS PAIR IN OPENING WIN Junior Becca Smith added two more goals to her career total with a pair against Tennessee Tech in the Mocs season-opening win in Cookeville. Smith tied for seventh on the Mocs single game record for goals scored, one behind her career-high three netted in her collegiate debut. She also moves up on the career charts to fifth for points as well as goals scored. HENRY A PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE Senior Donna-Kay Henry of Queens Village, N.Y., was named to the Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference Team as voted on by the league coaches. Henry, a three-time all-conference honoree, is second on the UTC all-conference charts with 60 points and 26 goals scored. She led UTC in scoring last season with nine goals and 20 points. MOCS DOWN MURRAY ST. IN SCRIMMAGE The Mocs hosted Murray State in a preseason scrimmage and came away with a 2-1 victory. All goals were scored in the first half with UTC striking a blow twice before MSU got on the board. Senior Donna-Kay Henry took a pass from junior Kelsey Swann and drilled the first goal home on an 15-yard shot from the right side hitting it past both a defender and the keeper. That was followed a short time later with a corner kick goal from sophomore Andria Aurand to the head of freshman Crystal Mackezyck right in front of the goal. After MSU scored to cut the lead in half, neither team allowed another score for the remainder of the match. SOCCER TO HOST NINE HOME MATCHES The women's soccer team begins its second season at Finley Stadium after a five-year hiatus from the 20,000+ - seat stadium. The Mocs will host nine matches including five in the Southern Conference. The Mocs will open the home slate with a three-game stand beginning with Austin Peay on August 21 followed by an August 28 match with Gardner-Webb. The third game of the series, Lipscomb on Sept. 2, will be played at GPS along the Tennessee River. For full article click here.
