After days of rain in the District, the sun came out along with thousands of fans to take part in the AT&T Nation's Football Classic featuring the Howard University Bison and the Morehouse College Tigers. As the crowd rushed into RFK Stadium Saturday afternoon the anticipation for the game started to heat up.
The countdown began back in February when it was announced that Howard and Morehouse would be featured in The Nation's Football Classic here in DC at the RFK Stadium to address the historic rivalry against the two schools that haven't played one another since 1997.
After national recording artist and D.C. native Raheem DeVaughn brought everyone to their feet with his singing of the national anthem, the game began with the tigers winning the coin toss.
The game started out with a battle of pure field position through a combination of defensive stands, miscues on offense, and mediocre punts.
Freshman quarterback Greg McGhee finished the game 22 for 29 with 248 passing yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 46 yards. McGhee said after the game, playing in front of a crowd of over 18,000 people gave him butterflies.
"I was shocked by how many people were in the stadium," said McGhee, also named the classic's most valuable player. "Everyone has butterflies before a game.
I got hit a couple times and I was ok so I was able to sit in a great pocket after that."
The Maroon Tigers jumped on the scoreboard first with an 18-yard pass from quarterback Derrick Hector to wide receiver Donnay Ragland, concluding a 36-yard drive that took six plays with 1:39 off the clock.
The Bison soon answered with a 39-yard strike from McGhee to senior wide receiver Willie Carter. This was the first of two touchdowns where Carter was on the receiving end.
The stadium got hyped during half time with the Battle of the Bands. Howard's "Showtime" and Morehouse's "House of Funk" faced off center field to claim the title of the best marching band. Television personality AJ Calloway and actress Keisha Knight-Pulliam hosted this segment.
Things took a turn in the second half after all the excitement of half time. Morehouse came out the gate aggressively and it continued through the game. In two plays, Morehouse scored on a 79 yard rush straight through the defense making it a 20-9 Maroon Tiger lead.
The Bison showed resilience in this moment to battle back and not let this lead get out of hand. Team captain and junior linebacker, Keith Pough, exemplified the focus that his team needed to stay in the game.
