Campus Construction Boom

Campus Construction Boom
Posted By: HBCU Connect Sports on September 18, 2011

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Changes are coming to two Montgomery universities. Major construction projects are underway at Alabama State University and Auburn University Montgomery. This despite many students and alumni arestruggling to find jobs in a stagnant economy.

You can hear the sound of a busy day of construction at Auburn Montgomery. AUM Chancellor John Veres says all the hard hats and tools are signs that these tough economic times have lowered construction costs and boosted the industry.

"It's a window of opportunity to be able to afford to do more for your students," Veres said.

It's no surprise to see all the buildings going up on campuses around the River Region. Officials say now is the time because interest rates are lower and materials are cheaper. A new wellness center is almost complete, renovations are underway at the student center and plans are unfolding for a new residence hall; giving hope to college students who're also looking for work.

Construction is also booming at Alabama State University.

"Over the course of our construction program, more than $250 million dollars worth of construction," Vice President of Buildings and Ground Kippy Tate said.

From a new library to a new football complex that's slated to be ready for the Turkey Day Classic in November of 2012.

"It's very active around here," Tate said.

Booming now, hoping students will boom later on job placements.

WSFA 12 News spoke with a Troy University official who says there are several major construction projects on the main campus. The new dining facility opens September 24th and theeven larger Trojan Arena project is still a work in progress. Estimates for all projects are close to $60 million dollars.
