Ford Awards “All In Technology” Scholarships To Students Attending HBCUs

Ford Awards “All In Technology” Scholarships To Students Attending HBCUs
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 13, 2011

Joining forces with nationally syndicated radio personality and education advocate Tom Joyner, Ford is helping college students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities further their education through the “All In Technology” scholarship program. The award, a $10,000 scholarship, was awarded to students studying within one of four STEM majors.

Shawn Lollie, Ford Multicultural Marketing Manager cited that recent research indicates a comprehensive understanding of math and science will be required to obtain jobs of the future. “STEM is a way of thinking, these students are leading to breakthroughs in innovation,” Lollie said. “Just look at the numbers, projections by the U.S. Department of Labor show that of the 20 fastest growing occupations projected for 2014, 15 of them require mathematics or science preparation.”

For the 2011-2012 academic year The Tom Joyner Foundation received recommendations from five HBCUs across the country. Eligible students had to be enrolled full-time as a junior or senior with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Emphasis was placed on students who showed involvement on campus and within community organizations. Students were also asked to submit their plans for the future as part of the application process.

“At Ford, we recognize that education is paramount in today’s society, and in a tough economy we want to do our part in ensuring students are rewarded for their hard work,” expressed Lollie. “We are proud to have partners such as Tom Joyner that also understand the importance of higher education within the African American community,” Lollie added.

Beginning September 13, recipients were announced weekly on The Tom Joyner Morning Show during award-winning journalist, social activist and political commentator Jeff Johnson’s segment.
