Oakton Community College Announces Faculty Openings

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 14, 2011 DES PLAINES, IL - Seventeen full time, tenure track faculty openings beginning with the 2012-13 academic year are available in thirteen disciplines at Oakton Community College, beginning in August 2012. Located in the near north suburban Chicago communities of Skokie and Des Plaines and one of the country’s premier comprehensive community colleges, Oakton is a caring community of educators dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning. Faculty employed by Oakton are current in their use of evolving technologies, active in promoting critical thinking, and committed to challenging their students to be knowledgeable, ethical, and capable global citizens. Candidates committed to working in a culturally competent environment are especially valued at Oakton. Cultural competence integrates and transforms knowledge about individuals and groups of people into specific standards, policies, practices, and attitudes used in appropriate cultural settings to increase the quality of services. Oakton seeks enthusiastic faculty committed to innovation in college-level teaching and learning, and interested in non-traditional delivery of instruction. The College expects full time faculty to be professionally competent, have strong leadership qualities, participate in professional development activities, and to engage in institutional and departmental service. Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred. The primary teaching responsibility for the Art position is in Art History, with a possible secondary teaching responsibility in Ceramics. Candidates must be able to provide departmental leadership and support for Ceramics curriculum, regardless of whether or not the candidate teaches Ceramics. We seek two fill two Biology faculty openings. One position will primarily teach General Biology I and II. The other position includes teaching Environmental Science and General Biology courses. The preferred Chemistry candidate should specialize in Organic Chemistry and have significant experience with GC, HPLC, FTIR, NMR and other modern instrumentation used in organic chemistry. Primary teaching responsibilities will be Organic Chemistry I and II, and Elementary Organic Chemistry, with periodic opportunities to teach other departmental offerings. The Earth Science faculty’s teaching responsibilities include introduction to earth science, physical geology, physical geography and historical geology. Three generalists in the teaching of English are sought who can teach a range of college English courses with the additional qualifications to teach Composition, Developmental English, or Business and Technical Communications. Fire Science department interests include the maintenance of relationships with regional partners and expansion into Emergency Management and Homeland Security curricula. The faculty hired into this department will serve as chair of a small department. This position will be based out of our campus in Skokie. Primary teaching duties for the History position are in U.S. History. A background in one or more of the following history subfields would be an asset for the applicant: Native Americans, Chicago, urbanization, African American, or U.S. culture/popular culture.. The ability to teach interdisciplinary humanities, teach a broad range of courses offered by the department, and to incorporate anti-racist and global perspectives into teaching are preferred from Humanities applicants. The College seeks Mathematics faculty who desire and are able to teach the range of Mathematics courses from Arithmetic to Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. Nursing faculty with prior college teaching experience in Medical Surgical, Newborn and/or Psychiatric nursing are preferred. This position will be based out of our campus in Des Plaines. Licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants are sought to teach a broad range of courses in the Physical Therapist Assistant department. This position will be based out of our campus in Des Plaines. Psychologists with CADC certification are preferred to fill the Psychology faculty opening. Experience as a program coordinator and knowledge of IAODAPCA regulations is a plus for psychologist applicants. The primary responsibility for Speech and Theater faculty is teaching an introductory general education speech course. Responsibilities may include teaching additional communication and theater courses. The individuals hired will join a small, highly collaborative faculty that presents six annual productions in a state-of-the-art, two theater performing arts center.
