Senior, running back Antwain Lyde rushed for 129 total yards and scored 3 touchdowns in a 21-16 road victory for the Trojans of Virginia State University over the Lions of Lincoln University on Saturday, Oct 22 in West Grove, PA.

The Trojans snapped a two game road losing streak and improved their overall record to 4-4 and 3-3 in the CIAA conference with a great victory over the Lions. VSU held the Lions to 51 total rushing yards but allowed 316 total passing yards. The Trojans committed no offensive turnovers, forced a fumble on defense, and also blocked an extra point attempt.

After an early touchdown score by Lincoln’s offense, VSU’s Antwain Lyde broke out for a season long 48 yard touchdown score to tie the ball game up at 7-7. Lyde led the Trojans with 31 rushes for a total of 129 yards with 3 touchdowns.

Lincoln’s Kyle Kaski knocked in a 25 yard field goal with 4:45 remaining in the first quarter that put the Lions ahead of the Trojans 10-7. The second quarter began with a Lincoln offensive turnover and a defensive fumble recovery by VSU’s junior, linebacker Alandus Beggs. Beggs had 3.5 tackles and applied constant pressure to LU’s quarterback forcing 3 hurries.

On the Trojans next offensive drive, Lyde scored his second touchdown of the game on a 26 yard rush to put VSU ahead 14-10 going into the half.

Both defenses played smart and physical as there was a total of 3 first downs recorded in that quarter. Lincoln began the fourth quarter with a 29 yard touchdown pass to take a 16-14 lead. Lincoln missed the extra point attempt but had the lead for a moment with 12:20 left in the game.



On the Trojans’ next drive, junior, quarterback Jarred Battle connected on several plays racking up 49 passing yards and setting up Lyde for his third rushing touchdown score from 4 yards out. The Trojans put together 6 plays for 60 yards and took a 21-16 lead over the Lions with 2:48 left in the game.

The Trojan defense did not allow another Lions score and VSU was able to hold onto to the 5 point lead and defeat Lincoln University 21-16 on the road. The Trojans won their second road game of the season after playing their sixth out of seven totaled.

Junior, linebacker Gary Johnson, Jr. led VSU with 6 total tackles and sophomore defensive back Andre Rawls had 5.5 tackles. The Trojans recorded 4 sacks and put great pressure on the Lincoln quarterback with 13 quarterback hurries. Junior, Clifton Haney led with six hurries.

Senior, kicker/punter William Rudd nailed 3 of 3 extra point attempts against the Lions. He is perfect this season having maded 19 of 19 extra point scores. Rudd also had 9 punts for a total of 383 yards and knocked 4 punts inside the Lions 20 yard line. He booted one punt for a long of 64 yards.

Junior, quarterback Jarred Battle managed the game exceptionally well with no turnovers and completed 12 of 18 passes for 112 total yards. He found four Trojans and had a long of 29 yards to sophomore, Thaditguss Lewis. Junior, Corey Young led with 5 catches for 23 yards.

Virginia State University’s football team will welcome I-95 rival, Panthers of Virginia Union University to Rogers Stadium at the 2011Trojan Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 29th at 1:30 p.m. Both the Trojans and Panthers will enter this game with an overall record of 4-4.
