DaQuan Marcell Love: A Vision of Leadership and Sacrifice Personified

Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on November 19, 2011 He is 19 years old and for 15 of those years he has been a dues-paying member of the most revered civil rights organization in the nation - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or as it is more popularly known, The NAACP. Perhaps his longevity in the organization explains why this young man can stand at the podium and with a mixture of calm aplomb and dramatic recitation reel off a dazzling oration of why he should be elected as President, NAACP College and Youth Division. The young man is DaQuan Marcell Love, a bronze life member of the NAACP and a Hampton University sophomore majoring in Political Science with a concentration in Pre-Law, and minoring in Leadership Studies at the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute. He is confident, well-spoken, intelligent and a NAACP'er to his very core. A fact borne out by the obvious pride he exudes when speaking of the $1500 grant his Hampton University Chapter received for developing an innovative HIV/Aids Awareness Program. He further reminds this reporter of the recognition the Hampton U Chapter received by being named College and University Chapter of the Year at the recent state convention. As he speaks there is a semblance of recognition of another man. Who does he remind me of? Then it becomes clear. His speaking style, his unabashed pride, his strength of conviction, all recall to mind another brilliant orator who assumed the mantle of civil rights leadership at a very early age and helped catapult the civil rights issue to national prominence during the 1950's and '60's. That man was the Rev.
