Let's Do the Right Thing for East Highland Park

They typically arrive after the major event has occurred and report on what is believed to have happened. The same can be said for photographer's, the behind the camera folk who let the action and the story play out as they record it. This reporter is both a reporter and a photographer. A photo-journalist is the name we sometimes go by. I say all this to say, by training and temperament, being the story has never been my goal. Today, that will change. Why? Simply because it is my turn to summon up the courage and strength of character I advise others to in my columns. Today, a series of incidents of random gun fire occurred in and around the East Highland Park neighborhood in which I live. Today, as I approached my home in this troubled East Highland Park neighborhood, I saw police tape and a substantial police presence outside my home. While most would find this shocking, I did not. Unfortunately, my senses have become numb to such sights because they are common-place in East Highland Park. Some weeks ago I reported a double shooting and wrote a column asking that the neighborhood be designated a zero-crime tolerance zone. see, http://www.examiner.com/african-american-c... In that article, I compared the crime rates of Shockoe Slip and my neighborhood. The news article is important because it was written within days of Richmond Police Chief Bryan Norwood announcing a zero tolerance crime policy for Shockoe Slip. One need not be a photographer to see the stark contrasts that exist between East Highland Park and Shockoe Bottom.
