Last night, Richmond Times reporter Bill Mcelway, reported that two men, were shot in Richmond's Church Hill community. According to reports, the men were transported to an area hospital. One has life-threatening injuries.

What is sobering about this report is its similarity to an incident that occurred in East Highland Park on November 21st. In that incident there were at least two separate instances of random gun fire. Last night's incident appeared to be a carbon copy in that it too involved 2 separate instances of gun fire.

Just a few days ago, Richmond Occupy announced it is coming out of hibernation and will be marching from Monroe Park to Kanawha Plaza and then to Richmond's Federal Bank.

How are these events related? They are related in this respect. They all involve important issues of the day and the manner in which politicians and elected officials at all levels have chosen to address them. Or should I say, chosen not to address them?

There once was a time when we looked to our elected officials to offer creative and innovative programs and initiatives to assist the body politic be all it could be. Governmental service was seen as an honorable endeavor and most people who elected to forego the riches offered by corporate interests did so willingly and without the expectation of becoming millionaires in the process.
