Maryland's HBCUs have outlived their usefulness
|
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 04, 2012 Whether Maryland's historically black colleges and universities can compete in producing graduates commensurate in ability with those of other institutions in the state should be the sole factor in determining their funding ("Md. fails to keep its promise to HBCUs," Dec. 28). The necessity to constantly compensate for past discrimination, real or imagined, has ended. To the extent that Maryland's HBCUs feel their state funding hasn't kept pace with that of other state institutions of higher learning, their complaint could be addressed by merging the HBCUs more completely into the overall University System of Maryland. Barry Dennis poses this question for all the wrong reasons. There are five threats to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and none of these areas speak to whether an HBCU outlived its usefullness. They are: Prolonged Recession and funding issues, Getting students and keeping them, them and keeping them, News Competition, Conservative Ethos/Constricting Campus Culture, Fear of impending doom meaning the possible foreclosures. HBCUs are open enrollment schools just as any other NON-HBCUs. The fact that other races don't choose to go to these schools isn't because of their proven quality of education, why would anyone choose not to get a quality education??? So the reason must lay elsewhere and most of know exactly what that reason may be... If anyone listened to my broadcast on KKFI FM 90.1FM on December 31st, I spoke to this very subject. However, I take exception to Mr. Dennis of the Baltimore Sun's question. Mr. Dennis is pro the University of Maryland and has never championed any of the programs at Morgan State, Bowie, Townsend or Chopin. Mr. Dennis has never once really addressed the issues surrounding the "Adams States" before the United States Supreme Court and funding to properly compete. Mr. Dennis fails to even question why there is a huge statue of Supreme Court Taney who rendered the horrible racist decision surrounding the Dred Scott case. Mr. Dennis fails to question why the University of Maryland gets such huge funding and Morgan State gets so little to compete for students. The problem with HBCUs is not whether they have outlived their usefulness; the problem with HBCUs is people like Mr. Dennis and Uncle Thomas on the US Supreme Court and states not complying with the Supreme Court decision surrounding the Adams States.
