Dillard’s Henrietta Harris Wins American College Personnel Association’s Outstanding Professional Award

Honor Caps a 40-Year Career in Higher Education

(New Orleans) The American College Personnel Association (ACPA) announced this week that Dr. Henrietta Harris, director of the Center for the First Year Experience at Dillard University, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Experienced Professional (11+ Years) Award from its Commission for Admissions, Orientation, and First Year Experience. She will accept the award in March at the ACPA’s annual convention in Louisville, Ky.

“I am extraordinarily honored to have received this award,” said Harris, who will retire on Feb. 3. “I’ve worked in higher education for more than 40 years. I’ve held a variety of positions and enjoyed them all. However, none has been as rewarding as working with first-year students. To see the growth and development that takes place in students from the time they set foot on campus for freshman orientation to the end of their first academic year – it brings joy to my heart.

This award is for them.”

Harris joined Dillard University in 2004 as the dean of student performance for the Division of Academic Affairs. She previously held teaching, management and administrative positions with North Carolina Central University, the Maricopa County Community College District, and Knoxville College, where she taught sociology as an assistant professor in the 1970s.

Harris earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Haven, master’s degrees from Southern Connecticut State University and Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University.

“Dr. Harris has truly been an inspiration to me,” said Dr. Camacia Smith-Ross, director of Upward Bound and TRiO at Dillard University. “Her passion, wealth of experience, and implementation of turnkey initiatives have enabled her to create an outstanding program for the first-year students at Dillard. I commend Dr. Harris because she is not afraid of change and always embraces the learning curve.”
