Student-Run Clinic Opens Its Doors
|
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 27, 2012 With the recent opening of The New Freedmen's Clinic, free medical services are now offered to Howard University students and uninsured residents of Washington, D.C. "We have seen students in our clinic that are sick," Chijindu Nworgu, current director of the clinic said Initially, Howard University Hospital was known as Freedmen's Hospital, which serviced freed slaves and disabled African-Americans until 1975, and still over a hundred years later, the hospital continues to serve the Howard and D.C. communities. Originally, the new clinic was the dream of Howard University student Raolat Abdulai in 2009. Co-Bolanle Abayomi plans to broaden the clinic's aid by recruiting students from the dental school to offer free dental care, law students to help patients navigate through the legal system, and social work students to better manage the clinic. The clinic is only open on Mondays because student volunteers are currently operating it. "We hope to expand, but at this point we can only do a few hours," Nworgu said. Howard University students can visit the clinic, spread the word of its advantages, help with funding or simply visit www.nfclinic.org for more information. Public relations chair Peju Adekoya hopes to extend the services and exposure of the clinic with events such as the Women's Clinic on Feb. 6. The clinic, which is located in the Howard University Hospital , is completely staffed and run by Howard University students and is open on Mondays from 6-9 p.m. Source: http://www.thehilltoponline.com/ If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
