Meacham on October 13, 2005 Les has been described by jazz critics as a "thoroughly educated and harmonically sophisticated musician," both of which he received at TSU as a member of the marching and concert bands as well as one of the arrangers for the Tennessee State Collegians of the early 50's (the other one was Hank Crawford). Spann's discography includes albums with Dizzy Gillespie and Quincy Jones and under his own name as well. His was a most unusual double in that he played and recorded on both guitar and flute.
