Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 31, 2012 Open Source Center (OSC) geographers are the intelligence community’s experts on foreign mapping, geographic information and geospatial technologies. They combine skills in geography and allied disciplines (i.e., GIS, cartography, geology, remote sensing, photogrammetry, imagery analysis, urban planning, etc.) with area knowledge to review and assess all sources of geographic information in all its varied forms (paper, digital, internet, etc.). OSC geographers provide maps, data, information, analytical products, training and a host of related geographic services to those on the front lines of intelligence today. Seasoned geographers with special training will engage in projects with mission partners and manage contracts to accomplish geographic information goals possible only through a team effort. The candidates we seek have a deep grasp of the technological breadth that defines geography today, from traditional mapping to the latest GPS-driven navigational devices. Candidates will have a keen interest in foreign affairs, enjoy travel, appreciate foreign cultures and will naturally develop a network of fellow geographers across Government and the world. All geographers we seek are creative and feel right “at home” in today’s connected, inter-networked and mobile information environment. We are especially interested in geographers with the desire and talent to extend their individual substantive impact through managing contracts and projects. Geographer positions are based in the metropolitan Washington, DC area with limited opportunities for overseas-based assignments. Temporary travel is required of all geographers. In addition to salary and benefits, geographers are eligible to earn annual language “bonus” pay based on in-house language proficiency testing. Geographers also have the opportunity to take language courses and to maintain professional credentials through further training and participation in conferences and professional organizations. RequirementsMinimum requirement includes a bachelor’s degree in geography or a directly related discipline. A strong background and work experience in geographic information systems, cartography, or an allied science is highly desirable, as is foreign language capability, mature writing skills, and a willingness to travel domestically and overseas. Applicants should have strong organizational and communication skills, and a creative and energetic approach to work. All applicants must successfully complete a thorough medical and psychological exam, a polygraph interview and an extensive background investigation. US citizenship is required. To be considered suitable for Agency employment, applicants must generally not have used illegal drugs within the last twelve months. The issue of illegal drug use prior to twelve months ago is carefully evaluated during the medical and security processing. Important Notice: Friends, family, individuals, or organizations may be interested to learn that you are an applicant for or an employee of the CIA. Their interest, however, may not be benign or in your best interest. You cannot control whom they would tell. We therefore ask you to exercise discretion and good judgment in disclosing your interest in a position with the Agency. You will receive further guidance on this topic as you proceed through your CIA employment processing.
