I Appreciate It!

Posted By: Andrea McCormick on October 14, 2005 I graduated from Grambling State University 05/22/05 a well known HBCU in North Louisiana, then was accepted to Central Missouri State University Graduate Program in Southeast Missouri a PWU (predominantly white university). I was amazed at all the “extras” that the university had to offer, I mean there were beautiful fountains all around, the student union is quiet amazing, the extra student services are quite extraordinary, and there are some other things... However, I missed the multitude and variety of colored skin that I was accustomed to seeing on a daily basis at my beloved GSU. And although this school offered a little extra, they didn’t offer that home grown love that was found at my HBCU. See… I missed the fact that I could walk into financial aid and get recognized by that same lady that sits at the front desk that gave me an attitude since day one, and for my teachers to know my name, not just my initials and number. I miss my heritage being displayed on a daily basis, and the colorful display of different cultures, but most of all I miss those that I could relate to! I appreciate the environment, culture, and invaluable experiences (good/bad) that I gained from my HBCU experience. And because of GSU it makes me a better person to handle the daily displays of ignorance, and because of my exposure to a wide variety of influences I can handle ANYTHING! *I miss my GSU, Karletta, Najla, DJ, Ezinne, Lil Pooh, Tinnea, and all the rest of my extended family and friends that made my four years worth while!
