I Just Want To Graduate: A Students Struggle to stay in school

I Just Want To Graduate: A Students Struggle to stay in school
Posted By: Michelle Carter on March 20, 2012

I Have attended Livingstone college since June 2010 and my experience there has been one for the books. aside from all the drama of college my biggest issue was paying for it. Not only am i a young black woman trying to create a better life for myself the right way but i honestly thought that the best thing for me to do was to attend a HBCU in my home state of North Carolina but maybe now im starting to re-think my decision to do so. As advertised on websites all over the internet my school Livingstone college says that there tuition is around 13 to 15 thousand a year but once i got enrolled there i came to find out that it was not..in fact tuition for one year there is $22,050 which is way out of the ball park price range i was expecting. being from Durham,NC and coming from a single parent household i really didn't know how i was going to pay for 4 years at this school.

My mother hasn't worked in almost 4 full years due to injuries and the only way i could afford to stay in school was to take out loans every year and still even then with my loans and grants and scholarships i STILL owe them money to this day. There is no way i can afford to pay them over $2,000 in a balance and still take out loans to stay at their school. so with all my finance issues i have made the very hard decision to leave school and come back home to try and find work so that i can pay off my balance so i can continue my education which is hard because nobody is trying to hire but the only thing i can do is keep the faith in my God that something will come through so that i can finish my last 2 years of under grad and go to grad school and live my life to make a difference its hard trying to do it all alone and without help from the school and with tuition going up every year i really do not know how i will make it but i will one way or another.even if i have to work for a year or two before i can go back to school i will do what i have to my education is the most important thing to me in m y life If you all have any advice or anything that could help please comment below .

Don't leave. It gets hard when you focus on the numbers. Listen, there are all sorts of small scholarship things to try. Talk to your church folk. It's a AME Zion school I know cause I went there too. Go to some of those local churches and ask about their scholarships. There is also a tuition discount for AME ZIon members so think about that too. DO NOT QUIT!

My advice is to not give up! I'm in a very similar situation. I'm from a single parent household as well and paying for college (out of state tuition at that) has not been easy at all. Having to take out loans and applying for scholarships can be stressful yet without the help of both I would not be able to say that I have eight more classes left until I graduate. I would suggest talking to the Alumni at your school and try to find sponsors, look for local scholarships. I have noticed that the local scholarships I apply for I tend to get. Also, try local churches or even a church you attend. Whatever you do, do not lose faith and try to remain encouraged. I'm sure God will provide. Please let me know if you need any websites or any other help!

i have been helping an hbcu student majoring in business for almost 2 and a half years. i share what once my road trip to casino, feeling sorry for myself-wife left therapy funds. i work fulltime and am retired army. i met this young future atar who had a flat tire on the roadside. after learning of her goals and the fact she was pushing 2 partime jobs and taking on full load of courses. i asked if i could help. today, i feel good about who i am, still learning of the golden value of hbcu's (i took courses all over the world where military bases had college classes, however did not achieve a degree (my fault), but am going to take courses to finish a degree.. the most important fact of the relationship is i wanted to show this young sister that we are our brother and sister's keeper and all sacrifices large and small should be made to move our people forward in a competitive world. there are no strings attatched and she can pay it forward if she has the opportunity it is truely a blessing and i feel that god sent her and it gave me focus. thank you
