Posted By: How May I Help You NC on March 20, 2012 ![]() UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ ART DEPARTMENT Chair of the Art Department and Artist/Practitioner in Social Practice or Environmental Arts Associate or Full Professor The Art Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a creative chair of the department/tenured faculty position. We are seeking an innovative artist/arts practitioner with a distinguished research record in the field of social practice and/or environmental arts. The successful candidate will help shape the vision of and launch our new MFA in Social and Environmental Arts Practice and guide our redesigned undergraduate program. S/he will teach in both programs. Our new chair should have a theoretical background, have a creative interest in digital/print/new media and be engaged in collaborative practice across the arts, humanities and sciences. Applicants from related fields such as design and architecture are also invited to apply. Our new chair should enjoy working with students, faculty and staff from a wide variety of social and cultural backgrounds. The chair will have the opportunity to work across affiliate groups of research and study with other departments and schools on campus and throughout the UC system. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service. The campus currently operates on a schedule of three 11-week quarters per academic year. This position specifically entails: teaching 5 five-unit courses per year, or their equivalent, in accordance with the department's workload policy; advising and mentoring students; actively engaging in research activity; and actively participating in administrative responsibilities for the department, affiliated college, and the campus. We are located among redwood forests and meadows overlooking Monterey Bay, along California’s Central Coast in close proximity to Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. We have an array of exceptional studios and classrooms that include an up-to-date digital imaging lab, metal shop, foundry, drawing and painting studios, photo labs and print studios. The Art department is a key player in the newly founded Hub Social Practice Research Center. We also share a newly completed Digital Arts Research Center, which fosters creative work in new media and technology. Further information about the Art Department can be found on our website. RANK: Associate Professor to Full Professor SALARY: A competitive package commensurate with qualifications and experience, and level of appointment MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Terminal degree (MFA or other) and standing equivalent to rank of associate professor or above required. Solid understanding of scholarly theoretical research in the field of social practice and environmental arts. An established and rising practice-based research profile demonstrated through publications, exhibitions and research projects. Demonstrated university level teaching and successful university level administration. Experience working with graduate students and graduate education in the arts and a service record worthy of a tenured appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D.(practice or research based), demonstrated high level of leadership performance in chairing a department/administration, and a high level of technical proficiency and knowledge of current new media, digital and/or print media. POSITION AVAILABLE: July 1, 2012, with academic year commencing Fall 2012. Position is contingent upon final budgetary approval. Images, no larger than 2MB each. Please label and number in the order you wish them to be reviewed with brief description of each work.); 5) In case of collaborative work please clearly specify your role in each project; 6) Three Syllabi from both graduate and undergraduate courses previously taught; 6) Names of three confidential referees from whom the applicant has solicited letters of recommendation. Referees should send letters of recommendation directly to the Department. All letters will be treated as confidential.
