HBCU director speaks at TC Convocation

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on April 16, 2012 TALLADEGA — Dr. John Wilson, executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, spoke Thursday to students and faculty at Talladega College’s honors convocation at DeForest Chapel. Wilson gave a presentation titled “Seven Habits of a Built-to-Last Talladega College.” The seven habits outlined by Wilson were changing perspective, striving for academic excellence, aligning, examining, deepening, sharpening and dethroning. Wilson said that “perspective is worth 100 points,” and no matter how lost or confused one might be, a person can change his or her outlook on life and gain intelligence. He said African Americans have excelled onstage and in the pulpit because those are two places where they have freedom. However, Wilson said he believes African Americans need to strive for academic excellence. He said African American males drop out of school faster than others and are more likely to be unemployed, unemployable or in prison.
