WILDCATS News: Just Do You' interview with Annette Burgess

April 11, 2012 - There’s never a dull moment in Fort Valley State University’s Office of Leadership and Character Development. The large office nestled in the upper level of the university’s Student Amenities Building is the headquarters for coordinator Annette Burgess—a woman who wears many hats on campus. Each morning, the advisor and the FVSU alumna hits the ground running, organizing and planning events to cultivate student leadership at her beloved alma mater. By midday, the office is swarming with SGA officials, Royal Court members and university ambassadors who work closely with Burgess to bring great ideas to life. Her days are filled with ringing phones, deadlines, running errands, planning events and meetings. Most would be overwhelmed by the heavy workload; but the wife and mother of two says working for FVSU’s student body is a labor of love.

In this week’s “Just Do You,” Tauheedah Shukriyyah Asad, public relations specialist in the Office of Marketing and Communications, talks to Burgess about her unique role at the university and juggling a demanding workload.

Tell me about your position on campus.

I’m the coordinator for leadership and character development. In this role, I wear many hats. I’m the advisor to Mr. and Miss FVSU and the Royal Court. I’m also a committee chair for the Greek Life Advisory Council and the Pan-Hellenic Council. I also serve as advisor to student government and the student ambassadors program.

What’s a typical workday for you?

Working in student activities, we’re always busy, busy, busy. When one project ends, another begins. I have very little down time. We’re always being creative and trying to implement new programs on campus. So my days are always filled with excitement and energy.

You work closely with student leaders on campus. How do you get along with the students?

I think in my position, I kind of become a mom away from home for many students. They help me with planning activities, and they share their problems and concerns. I try to offer guidance whenever I can. The students keep me young, keep me inspired and keep me excited.

You’ve implemented a few new programs on campus. Can you tell me about iLead and the FVSU student ambassadors?
