Savannah, GA --

Established in 1890, Savannah State University isn't just the oldest institution of higher learning in the city, it also holds the title of being the oldest public historically black college or university (HBCU) in the state.

Now, the "University by the Sea" boasts another honor- SSU has been selected the winner of Upscale magazine's Institutions of Excellence Award for the Top HBCU in the country.

The university will receive $5,000 in cash and prizes at a special campus ceremony at 2:30 p.m., Monday, April 23, in the new Student Union.

The award is based on graduation rates, enrollment, academic performance, school history and commitment to student academic achievement.

The magazine solicited reader responses on its website via a voting poll that appeared in the September/October 2011 issue. The awards ceremony is open to the public.

Upscale is an Atlanta-based magazine company that provides business and entertainment news, health, beauty, and lifestyle information for African-Americans.

The Institutions of Excellence Award was created in support of HBCUs and to recognize the current financial straits institutions are experiencing.
