PIRATES News: HU Receives 120 Recycling Bins in Support of RecycleMania and Recycling Year-Round

Hampton, VA - The Alcoa Foundation, in partnership with national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and the College & University Recycling Coalition (CURC), is providing 120 recycling bins to Hampton University as part of its national bin grant program to colleges and universities throughout the country during the 2012 RecycleMania collegiate recycling competition. The bin grant program is an effort to help schools boost their results during the competition, and expand their recycling collections throughout the year.

Alcoa Foundation has awarded 32 grants to colleges and universities, ranging from well-known large universities to smaller schools. HU will use its bins to expand recycling in student housing, at athletic fields and in academic/ administrative buildings.

In total, 20,000 recycling bins will be distributed on campuses throughout the country.

"The Alcoa Foundation Collegiate Recycling Bin Grant presents an opportunity for the University to advance its recycle bin program," said Chair of the HU Goes Green Committee Doretha Spells, Vice President and Treasurer at HU. "There are specific occasions and events on our campus such as commencement, the alumni reunion picnic and homecoming where the amount of material that needs recycling makes it essential for us to have on hand recycle bins at designated locations.
