Canadians prefer Prince William to Prince Charles as next king: Poll

By Teresa Smith, Postmedia News May 4, 2012 5:48 AM
Britain's Prince Charles — who will make a highly anticipated visit to Canada at the end of this month to celebrate his mother's diamond jubilee — has been passed over in public opinion by commonwealth citizens who prefer his eldest son, Prince William for king.

When the widely popular Queen Elizabeth II passes the crown to her heir, people in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom — all of whom call Britain's monarch their head of state — would rather see the 29-year-old Prince William wearing it over his 63-year-old papa, according to an Angus Reid Public Opinion poll released Thursday.

Prince William has surpassed his grandmother to become the most popular member of the Royal Family, with 83 per cent of Australians, 82 per cent of Britons and 77 per cent of Canadians saying he ranks first in their opinion.

His wife, the pretty and popular Duchess of Cambridge, is now second on the list with similar ratings (79 per cent in Australia, 77 per cent in Britain and 73 per cent in Canada).

William and Kate, who chose Canada as their first trip abroad as a young marrieds, have skyrocketed in popularity and have pushed the Queen from the top spot, though seven of 10 respondents in the three countries still favour the elderly monarch, ranking her similarly to her younger grandson, Prince Harry.
