Hot Job: Senior Associate Director for Marketing Communications
|
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 07, 2012 General Responsibilities: The senior associate director helps the senior director and his managers define smart strategies, create flexible marketing and communications plans, develop engaging concepts, write compelling copy, and edit and shape other writers’ text with the ultimate goal of enabling frontline development staff to maximize philanthropic investment in MIT in the context of an ambitious fundraising campaign. The senior associate director is versatile and able to conceptualize, edit, and write for a broad range of projects—across a variety of communications channels and platforms—from long-form proposals to event invitations, from persuasive case materials to evocative tone poems. Conversant in science and technology, the senior editor is a word maven who thinks in concepts and understands graphic design; a superb interviewer and researcher who uncovers substantive and exceptional raw material; a storyteller with the eye and ear to find what is human and meaningful and recount it convincingly for an intelligent audience; an analytic thinker who can assess market research and help create the most effective communications that respond to it. Characteristic Duties: • Work closely with the senior director and colleagues in communications and around Resource Development, especially front-line fundraisers, to ensure communications meet their needs. • Collaborate with members of the communications staff to contribute to a cohesive, forward-thinking, and talented team. • Conceptualize, write, and edit text for a variety of projects that could include individual proposals and broader cases for support, brochures, event invitations, remarks, feature articles, ads, slide shows, films, press releases, and more, for distribution on screen, on paper, and in person. • Think deliberately about 1) audience and 2) communications platforms and vehicles to tailor the work most effectively. • Contribute to discussions around market research, communications plans, crisis management, meeting prep for the senior director, and other strategic issues. • In voice, tone, and sensibility capture the character of a distinctive institution and its people, appropriate to each assignment. • Do the necessary research for each assignment so every project contains the substance and detail that can continually engage a smart and savvy audience. • Interview faculty, students, administrators, and donors to get the information and insight, the context and quotes, to produce first-rate work. • Collaborate with colleagues on the design staff, as necessary, to ensure “words and pictures” work together to have the greatest impact on audience. • Oversee interaction with freelance writers and editors, when necessary. • Other duties as assigned to support the work of the Office of Communications, Division of Resource Development, and Institute leadership.
