Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 10, 2012 It’s that time of year where parents and students alike are searching for the millions of dollars of potential scholarships, grants, and financial aid that can be found to hedge against the cost of the gravity defying college education tuition and fees. The Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadline is June 30th, 2012, but there are many other ways to uncover additional monies to help supplement the cost of college. Here are TEN unusual scholarships that you may want to learn more about over the next few months. 1.) The Milk Mustache Scholarship - We know milk does a body good, but how about your wallet? Every year there is an award called the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache Of The Year Scholarship. You will need at least a 3.20 GPA just to jump over the bar to get in the nomination process, and winners can get up to a $7,500 scholarship. (source: www.sammyapplication.com) 2.) Skater Boys - Well, really it doesn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl. Just have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA, and let these folks know how skateboarding has had a positive impact in your life. You could be eligible as a grand prize winner for up to $5,000 scholarship money. Man, who said it doesn’t pay to be like Tony Hawk. (source: www.skaterscholarship.org) 3.) Be Tall or Be Short- I guess it just doesn’t pay to be average in stature. There are scholarships given just for men who are above 6’ 2” (women 5’ 10”) and scholarships for people who are less than 4’ 10”. The Billy Barty Foundation offers scholarships for those who are short, and the Tall Clubs International Scholarship has awards for those who are tall. (source: www.tall.org) 4.) I’ve Got The Best Apple Pie- The Culinary Institute of America is offers a $25,000 scholarship to the winner of its All-American Apple Pie Recipe Contest.” Applications, , must include an original apple pie recipe, a photograph of the finished pie, a 500-word essay about apples, a high-school and/or college transcript, and an application for The CIA’s bachelor’s degree program with supporting documentation. That may be more grueling than an episode of Chopped! 5.) I Want A Duct Tape Dress At The Prom- Duck® brand duct tape offers a $5,000 scholarship for the lucky couple who can use their brains to make the most unique prom outfit using Duck® brand duct tape. You should be prepared to be ‘stuck’ with your date that night for better or worse, but it’s worth the effort if you beat the other 4,000 plus contestants to win some scholarship money! Tell me you really want a picture with Shatner, but it will take more than that to convince me you don’t need the Vulcan death grip. Make Better Cotton Candy- Well, you can really make any type of candy. The American Association of Candy Technologists (who knew?) award up to a $5,000 scholarship for a sophomore, junior, or senior who has demonstrated an interest in confectionery technology. The Hangover- Some of us have used Tylenol to care for ourselves after we have a nasty hangover. Now, there is no scholarship for drinking to much and not being able to do anything the next morning. Green Eggs and Ham- Well, it isn’t this book although I love this one by Dr. Seuss. However, the story Oh, The Places You’ll Go is offering a $10,000 scholarship for the person who can inspire Dr. Seuss with an original two-dimensional art piece reflecting the meaning of Oh, The Places You’ll Go. Seinfeld- I wish you could earn this scholarship by celebrating Festivus! Like the rest of us! Jerry Seinfeld established this scholarship over 10 years ago where Seinfeld Scholars will get up to $10,000 to cover the costs toward their college education. You have got to graduate from a New York City high school, and you don’t even need to wear your hair like Kramer.
