Feeney / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Published: Thursday, May 10, 2012, 4:00 AM The Apollo Theater needs your help! The historic Harlem landmark, known for launching the careers of many successful black performers, is vying for a piece of a $3 million grant to restore the ornate architectural artwork in the theater. “It’s really important that we win this campaign because we’re working on preserving the Apollo for future generations,” said Kersten Stevens, who is leading the theater’s effort to win the contest. The uptown landmark is among 40 historic city sites selected by the Partners in Preservation program to compete in the online voting contest. The top four vote-getters will have their projects fully funded, and several runners-up will divvy up the rest. “We need the support of our Harlem community and the greater international community,” Stevens said. “It requires the support of people around the world.” The Partners in Preservation program, a collaboration of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express, selects a different city each year for the grant.
