Gates: Science and engineering main factors to create growth

Article | May 16, 2012 - 10:36am | By Stanislava Gaydazhieva The Bulgarian president, Rosen Plevneliev, commenced his first official visit to the United States which will continue until May 21. On the first day of his visit, the president met in Seattle the chairman of Microsoft Corporation, Bill Gates. According to Gates, the attractive forms of education, particularly the online education and training of teachers, were the basis for developing knowledge-based education. In Gates’ opinion, Bulgaria should have a few elite universities which to develop focus areas of education. In addition, he said that science and engineering were the main factors to create growth and increase people’s wealth. The Bulgarian president and the Microsoft chairman also discussed a couple of leading projects which were financed by the ‘Bill and Melinda Gates’ foundation. Furthermore, Plevneliev and Gates had a talk on Bulgaria’s scientific potential in the areas of healthcare, control on food production and training of medical specialists within the programs of the Gates’ Foundation in Africa. Some of them deal with diagnosis of tuberculosis, early diagnosis of cancer, and control of foodstuffs of animal origin. At the end of his meeting will Bill Gates, Plevneliev, cited by 24chasa.bg, said that its main aim was ‘to comment with a global visionary and a global business leader what the trends are and what the future of industries is’. He added that the meeting with Bill Gates took place in a very important for Bulgaria moment – the country’s planning of the 2020 program which will aim at developing industries, building infrastructure and addressing high technology, innovation and value-added industries. On the second day of his visit to U.S., president Plevneliev will have a series of meetings with representatives of American business. He will also take part in a roundtable on information technology, organized by "Rainer Club", where he will present the Sofia Tech Park project. Later in the day, the Bulgarian president will ahead to San Jose to continue his official visit.
