Colonel Young was the third African American to graduate from West Point and the first to reach the rank of Colonel. As the first African American to be named superintendent of a national park, Colonel Young served as a professor of Military Science at Wilberforce University. Remembered as a man of inspiration, a retired Colonel Young made a 500 mile horseback ride from Wilberforce, Ohio to the nation’s capital to show he was always "fit for duty". In honor of his achievements and support of our students and academic programs we present the Wilberforce University Colonel Charles Young National Walkathon demonstrating that Wilberforceans will carry the legacy to be "fit for duty".
