RATTLERS News: FAMU's Green set to be inducted into HOF
|
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 19, 2012 Written by St. Clair Murraine Democrat staff writer Hansel Tookes, a former coach, athletic director and educator at Florida A&M, made quite an impression on Marvin Green. "Coach Tookes was always passionate about what he put his mind to," said Green, head coach of the Rattlers' golf team. "He always told me about being passionate about what I get involved in. He told me about the reputation at FAMU and how FAMU has high standards. I wanted to make sure when I came behind that's what happens." Green's effort to attain the standards set by Tookes, who died in 2007, hasn't gone unnoticed. Earlier this week, he was named MEAC Golf Coach of the Year and on May 24 he will be inducted into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame. Malachi Knowles, president of the HOF, said Friday that Green's induction is for more than what he's done on the golf course. He cited the academic success of Green's players who have gone on to have successful careers outside of the world of sports. "Marvin Green stands out among all of the African American collegiate golf coaches in a number of ways," Knowles said. "He's had winning teams at FAMU and he is the first president of the National Black Golfers Association. They are helping other college kids as well to see golf as very important and come to the colleges to understand golf, play with their teams and also become good citizens." Green, a 1994 FAMU grad, took over the golf program 10 years ago after spending three years in an instructional role in the classroom. His team has become a perennial power among historically black colleges and has won multiple titles in the HBCU national championships that are staged by the PGA of America. Three of his golfers have won individual titles since FAMU won its last HBCU title in 2001. He's also head coach of FAMU's Simply Marvelous, a national champion women's flag football team. During his tenure as president of the National Black Golfers Association he took the lead in several initiatives. The biggest one of them led to the MEAC being in position to stage its first conference championships next spring, while it works toward gaining NCAA eligibility that would eventually lead to an automatic bid in the collegiate championships. That said Knowles shows Green's commitment to the game. "More than anything else, I'm humbled and proud that somebody recognizes what a lot of coaches are doing for HBCU golf," Green said. "I think a lot of me being selected just had to do with what I've done at FAMU over the last 10 years that I've been coaching; graduating my students and trying to represent historically black colleges and universities in collegiate competition. This organization is recognizing that body of work." Source: http://www.tallahassee.com/ If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
