TIGERS News: TSU Students Lead State in TAPB-TAPME Awards Nominations
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 29, 2012

NASHVILLE (TSU News Service) – A group of five students from Tennessee State University lead the state with six nominations for the Tennessee AP Broadcaster and Managing Editors awards to be presented June 16.

The students will compete in seven different categories in the college contest against entrants from MTSU, Vanderbilt University, UT-Knoxville, and UT-Chattanooga among others.

“We have been working hard for several years to revise our curriculum toward multimedia, build new facilities, renovate other spaces and hire innovative faculty,” said Dr. Terry Likes, Department Head/Professor of Multimedia Journalism. “Now we have evidence this hard work is paying off. To be finalists for more awards than any other school in Tennessee is a tribute our faculty, staff and students.”

TSU leads the nominations as six finalists followed by UT-Martin with four; MTSU, Vanderbilt and Pellissippi State with two; and UT-Chattanooga and UT-Knoxville each with one.

Finalists include:

Best College TV Newscast: Alexzandria Parish, Brittney Smith & Brian Sahlin, TSU-TV News 98
Best College Radio News Story: Kelli Volk, The Negative Effects of Texting
Best College Radio Feature Story: Brian Sahlin, Boxing, and Khadijah Williams, Calling It Quits
Best College Radio Sportscast: Khadijah Williams, WTST Sports Report, and Brian Sahlin, Sports Update.

Students from the Communications Department at the University are no strangers to awards and accolades. Earlier this year, four students, including Volk, Sahlin, and Williams, were recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists. Students also received recognition from the National Broadcasting Society and the Southeast Journalism Conference.

The TAPB-TAPME awards will be announced June 16 during the organizations annual banquet in Nashville.
