Find Out What Motivates Amtrak's Distinguished Professional: Dr. Julianne Malveaux

Find Out What Motivates Amtrak

FEATURED Content

Dr. Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author, and commentator. She also served as the 15th President of Bennett College for Women. Currently, Malveaux is the Honorary Co-Chair of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and serves on the boards of the Economic Policy Institute, and The Recreation Wish List Committee of Washington, DC. Dr. Malveaux is the Founder and Thought Leader of Last Word Productions, Inc., which has published her newest work, Surviving and Thriving: 365 Facts in Black Economic History. We asked Dr. Malveaux a few questions about what has inspired and motivated her along her journey to becoming the distinguished professional that she is today.
Dr. Julianne Malveax Interview

Q. What advice would you give to other people pursuing their dream job? What nuggets of wisdom can you share with others who are trying to stand out as an employee during these tough economic times?

Behave as if you already have your dream job. Act the part and others will see you that way. If you have doubt, work it out. If you are a woman, especially, don’t describe yourself as “lucky”, but as prepared when an opportunity came your way. To stand out, be on time, if not early, do what is required, and more, speak clearly and articulately, but don’t take credit for each and every one of your ideas, toot your own horn (sounds contradictory, but it isn’t), get to know the higher-ups, embrace excellence and exhibit it at all times.

Q. Who were the biggest inspirations for your career?

My mom, Proteone Malveaux, who is a risk-taker, returning to college for a Ph.D. when she was nearly 50; who was one of the first African Americans to teach at the University of Mississippi, who became an entrepreneur at an age when many retire, who embraces love, life, and compassion.

My mentor, Dr. Phyllis Ann Wallace, the first African American to get a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University, who put her hands on me and guided me through aspects of the economics profession, who was a force as a teacher, business leader (serving on several corporate boards, and civil rights activist, whose research shattered boundaries for African Americans and women.

Dr. Dorothy Irene Height whose vision and generosity of spirit has been an inspiration to so many, and personally to me. We spent time together and laughed with each other; I learned so much about leadership and collaboration from her.

Q.

What inspires and motivates you on a daily basis?

I am passionate about social and economic justice, which includes access to education, capital, and opportunity. At Bennett College for Women, I am motivated by those formerly enslaved people who conceived of and built our college. As a speaker and writer, I am also inspired both by those who came before me (Ida B. Wells, Ethel Payne) and by the continuing inequities that persist.

Q. What are your daily go to periodicals and websites?

Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and then I pick a paper from another city from time to time – San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, Detroit Free Press, anything to give me national information. Also allafrica.com, theroot.com, womensenews.com, and others. I pretty much surf the news for an hour or so each morning and on down time.

Q. What is the latest technology that you cannot do without?

(apps, Facebook, iPad, Nike sensor and sportband, etc)

Kindle, iPhone. I have an IPad, and I enjoy it, but I’d be lost without my Kindle (I know, there is a Kindle app on iPad, just haven’t mastered it yet). Also, I use myfitesspal.com to stay fit and track my eating.

Q. What do you enjoy about riding the train?

I enjoy the leisurely pace and quiet of the train. It is mostly peaceful and I can get a lot done with the wireless presence. I also love the view, especially of the water you see between Baltimore and Delaware. And it is much less harried, and allowing for everything, takes about the same time as the plane.

Q. Do you have a charitable organization? Why did you choose it? What advice would you give young people regarding giving back to their community?

I am the treasurer of the Recreation Wish List Committee, a 501-c-3 organization that serves the underserved in Ward 8 in Washington, DC. I chose the organization to work with both because it was founded and is led by a dear friend, Cora Masters Barry, but also because the young people in Ward 8 are quite impacted by the opportunity to be exposed to tennis and education at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center. I also support the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive economic think tank, and the Julianne Malveaux scholarship at Bennett College for Women, which supports student international travel. I advise young people to find a cause they are passionate about and support it with their time, talent, and tithe. Each of us walked across somebody’s back, and now we must be the bridges that others cross.
