The Pill of Positivity: The Cure for America's Most Dangerous Cities

The Pill of Positivity: The Cure for America
Posted By: Ladel Lewis on June 12, 2012

Talkitis (Tawk-kahy-tis): It is an acute case of non-stop running your mouth or flapping your jaws in a negative manner when it is unwarranted. Just like the Bubonic Plague paralyzed large areas in the United States decades ago, Talkitis is picking up where it left off. However, this disease is much worst. It not only affects the person with it, but it spreads instantaneously to anyone within an earshot, or in the case of our internet community, an eyeshot away. One does not have to be close, to become infected. One person can infect another on the opposite side of the globe. This ailment does not have any walls or boundaries. Sounds fatal. Indeed, many may coin the cure as a hard pill to swallow. Living with the symptoms and allowing this illness to become terminal is easier for many instead of seeking help and going through the healing process.

What am I talking about? I am referring to the spreading of negativity within inner city communities. It is so easy for residents to talk about what’s wrong and neglect what’s right. Furthermore, it is easier for us to point out the flaws instead of honing in on the solution. With the advent of social media, many chose to post things such as “2 gunned down”, instead of “City Awarded Grant to Create More Jobs” or “Volunteers Needed”.

This negative outlook not only affects the people you associate with, but also the overall perception of your community. People from all over the globe will begin to take your opinion as gospel because that is the only representation of the area they may have.
What can we do to solve this? First we must accept the diagnosis and decree that we can make a difference. In a political climate where it seems like the middle man is getting everything besides a fair shake, we must believe that a change will come if I get involved. Next, we must take the antibiotic of positivity to combat the sickening germs of negativity. Resolve that although negativity is present, positivity is Omni-present. Instead of talking about the obviously negative, let us focus on the irrevocable good. This refers to what the Christian bible considers, “renewing your mind”. If you must talk about the negative accounts that happen in your community, make sure you end the conversation with a possible solution. What’s the point of discussing the bad without a viable solution or plan of action?

It takes a fantast to initiate change and to see opportunity in the midst of disorder, and I am totally aware this is not the overall cure to inner-city issues. However, it is the start to preparing ourselves to deal with them from a holistic point of view. If you eat an elephant one bite at a time, it is obvious that you heal your city one citizen at a time. Are you up for the challenge?
