Bed & Breakfast Workshop
|
Posted By: Ivan Butcher II on June 25, 2012 I have my own challenges when it comes to writing, but there are those who choose to respond, especially negatively, have demonstrated that their comprehension skills are no better than their writing abilities. To make clear what I am expressing in this post, for one, I have not asked Mr Mosler or anyone else for any money. I asked Mr. Mosler as financial advisor to the President of the V. I. Legislation and probably the largest consumer of properties here in the Virgin Islands, for his advise and support. I first addressed Mr. Mosler in the article, Speaking for the Silent Majority on the topic of the Bed and Breakfast as a viable solution to the lack of rooms, jobs and opportunities for residents, here on St.Croix. Mr. Mosler owns vast tracks of land, which he says he has no plans to develop. The concern is how those he sells these properties to will they have the best intentions for both the residents and the environment. I have asked that this proposal be consider as an immediate approach to address the housing needs for an increased tourism campaign, especially an eco/cultural package. Last night, I attended a Chant (Crucian Heritage and a Natural Tourism) workshop, "How to Start a Bed and Breakfast Business", sponsored by SBDC (Small Business Development Center) of UVI. 6/21/12 The overall message was that it will not be easy, like so many have expressed. I grew up being told, anything worthwhile would not be easy to obtain. SBDC, where I got my start-up business support, offers assistance to everyone and anyone interested in going into the B&B business. They will walk you through the process from the beginning to the end. The most reinforcing workshop message supporting my post was that a B&B organized group effort will have more lobbying power to address issues concerning zoning, licensing, taxation and insurance cost. It was suggested that B&B businesses should join and umbrella under the Hotel and Room Association, which we were told that all of their taxes goes toward supporting the Department of Tourism's budget. Doing this would include their B&B business members in the Dept. of Tourism's listings, adds and commercials. ( this is only available to licensed in the Virgin Islands businesses) The point made to leave the government out of this is impossible because you will have to deal with government agencies and bureaucracy from licensing to taxation. Why considering grants and loans from the government? The government is the people and they are handling and spending our money. If the government can give tax exemptions for millions dollars to businesses coming offering a handful of jobs, I surely believe that we the people (government) as a community would not object to supporting a B&B industry here in the Virgin Islands, empowering their residents. To those supporters of the planned mega gated hotel compounds look some where else for your Investors, not from we the people of the Virgin Islands.
