House Guest 101

House Guest 101
Posted By: Ladel Lewis on June 27, 2012

Ever wonder if you have worn out your welcome? Have they told you to go without saying ‘get out’? Do you feel that your friendship maybe in jeopardy if you don’t vacate the premises? Well if so, you may need to take the course ‘house guest 101’, a quick prerequisite before you become ‘that visitor’.

Often times the writing is on the wall and the guest refuse to read the fine print. Whenever you stay with someone for a short or extended period of time, one must understand the unwritten rules. Many friendships are ruined by this. However, this does not have to be the case. Realizing that everyone does not run their household in the same manner, it must be recognized that the adaptability is key. During your stay, it is your responsibility to maintain the home equivalent or above the manner by which they normally keep it. For example, bathroom etiquette can make or break your visit.

Some household clean their bathroom once day and others clean theirs once a week. Whichever the case maybe, it is your job to leave it equivalent, but suggestively better than you found it. For instance, if you see the mirror has fingerprints and streaks on it, and the sink has leftover soap scum and toothpaste, take it upon yourself to allocate five minutes to clean both. If applicable, freshen up the toilet as well as the bathtub. Why? Because you use them!

More tips are:

•If you see dishes in the sink take it upon yourself to wash them. This is especially important if you eat, drink, and use their utensils.

•Keep your room or space clean. That says you appreciate the space allotted to you.

•Volunteer to help cook. Especially if you are ‘breaking bread’ at the home.

These simple ideas are just a few ways of how not to get you belongings placed on the other side of the door, followed by a Facebook post saying “I’m glad they’re gone.” Be a ‘heaven sent visitor’, and not a ‘house guest from hell’.

I'm about to have some house guest. I don't really care what they do because if I don't like it they won't be back and I don't mind telling them why if they ask. My wife's cousin wants to stay until she can find her a place. She just moved back to town and started a new job. I don't know if I can handle a women staying in my house not related to me........if you get my drift. That's just how I roll. But it's up to my wife as usual.
