The Executive Director of Advancement, Boston College Law School reports to the Vice President for Development and Campaign Director with strategic, functional reporting responsibility to the Dean, Boston College Law School and leads the development and alumni relations activities of the School. In partnership with the Dean and the Vice President for Development, the Executive Director develops and implements comprehensive Law School alumni engagement and gift development strategies leading to increased connectivity and philanthropic support of alumni, parents, and friends; oversees and manages the work of Law School advancement staff in the areas of leadership gifts, annual giving, alumni relations, donor relations, and key engagement programs and events; staffs the Dean's Advancement activities manages a portfolio of leadership and principal gift prospects leading to maximum gift outcomes to enhance school priorities; serves as liaison between the Law School and University Advancement, ensuring that all Advancement staff advance the goals and mission of the Law School; and, serves as a senior member and advisor to the Vice President for Development.

Work activities are carried out based on an annual work plan developed collaboratively and agreed upon between the Executive Director, the Vice President for Development and the Dean. In addition, the Executive Director manages the Dean's time for advancement purposes, including the Dean's advancement calendar and communications. Furthermore, the Executive Director manages a broad portfolio of leadership and principal gift prospects in assigned regions and at various stages of engagement with Boston College. This includes prospect identification, strategy development, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship Strategy is often set in concert with the Dean and other officers of the University. Solicitations may be executed directly by the Executive Director, by the Dean or other BC academic leaders, by a volunteer, or by an administrator or a colleague in the University Development Office. Preparation for trips involving the Dean or members of the faculty will include arranging meetings and writing briefings on the prospects with whom they are scheduled to meet. Events management includes small dinners in donors' homes or other venues, larger dinners or receptions and symposia or conferences. Event organization includes establishing guest lists, selecting and recruiting a host and speaker and coordinating logistics for the event. The Executive Director's responsibilities include selecting the guest list in consultation with colleagues and, in some cases, volunteers. The Executive Director works with volunteers and colleagues to prepare agendas for advisory committee meetings, such as the Law School Alumni Board and Law School Board of Overseers.





The Executive Director must understand the Law School and University at the enterprise level, appreciates how philanthropic support undergirds existing activities and helps to advance new initiatives, including an appreciation for the Law School and University budget and approval processes, and be able to work to maximize gift development opportunities within fiscal parameters. Success depends on an ability to both manage direct reports and to influence University Advancement colleagues to achieve Law School advancement goals.

Requirements


*This position requires a minimum of 7 to 10 years' experience in university advancement and administration.
*Knowledge of academic communities is required as is demonstrated success in soliciting major gifts, advancing alumni engagement goals, managing a dean or other senior leaders, events management and advancement communications.
*Must have proven ability to motivate, engage and work with prospects and volunteers, university leaders, administrators, faculty and staff or similar constituencies.
*This position requires a sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of advancement strategy, major gifts fundraising principles and practices, extremely high levels of professionalism, collegiality, self-motivation, organization and familiarly with the goals and objectives of the academic administration of Boston College, Boston College Law School and of the entire Boston College University Advancement organization.
*Excellent oral, written and nonverbal communications and writing skills are necessary as is the ability to coordinate with other University departments and volunteers.
*A working knowledge of Microsoft Office software is expected as are familiarity with fundraising databases.
*Travel expectations require approximately 20% of working days on the road and some evening and weekend work surrounding events.

Preferences:
*Strongly prefer senior level experience in a professional school environment
*Prefer a working knowledge of Millennium fundraising database.
