We couldn’t let them leave without giving you a little slice of life though! David Stone, who interned at S&P Capital IQ, graciously agreed to write a guest post on a day in his life here. We wish all of our approximately 250 interns a good rest of summer. Enjoy it while you can! And enjoy David’s post below. Learn more about our internship program here: http://www.mcgraw-hill.com/site/careers/co... The alarm strikes 6:15, my reluctant eyes barely open enough for me to hit the snooze button, knowing that five minutes from now my mind will be inundated with ideas on how to maximize the day ahead. An eighty-minute commute stands between my suburban New Jersey residence and the “concrete jungle.” While I ponder the opportunities and decisions that lay ahead, the first thought that registers is whether or not I need to shave? Then I realize that I work for a S&P Capital IQ, an organization that has an appreciation for a more casual culture. David Stone, making things happen As I get behind the wheel to embark on the journey into the city, every little decision is crucial to saving a few seconds here and there. A one lane switch or slamming of the brakes could make the difference between arriving to work at 8:15 or 9:00. Commuting into work is comparable to running a race. Each lane or track offers its unique entry into New York. Traffic jams and road construction are just two elements that serve as a barrier to the end destination. I try to parallel these inconveniences into the analogy of a runner in a marathon. Both require a certain patience and endurance; two qualities that are pertinent to an aspiring businessperson, like my fellow interns and myself. After landing at the World Trade Center via the PATH train, I briskly walk down Broad Street past the tourists posing in front of the New York Stock Exchange. Before arriving at the office I pay homage to my favorite street vendor, and for a mere two dollars pick up my daily coffee and bagel. Now that my caffeine craving has been met, I am ready to peruse the e-mails that have compiled in my inbox from the previous night. One of my favorite aspects of the internship has been a growing appreciation for the role S&P Capital IQ plays in the international marketplace. My inbox alerts me to an urgent e-mail from Hong Kong coupled with a follow-up message from an investment banker stationed in London (I can now dial internationally and know the time difference between New York and Hong Kong). The day has just begun. When’s lunch? Just one of the things you see from our offices on Water Street When I am not too busy handling assignments from the Research Acquisition and Distribution team, I take a deep breath and take in the view from my 42nd floor window that faces downtown Manhattan. As I reflect on my internship, it is rewarding to see the level of trust that the team has placed in me as the summer has progressed. I started off working in an isolated segment of entitlements, inputting data into Excel spreadsheets, but now have gradually been entrusted with more client-facing roles. My day-to-day activities now consist of phone calls and e-mails between our client’s sales contacts at Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank. In my experiences contacting bank representatives, I now have a greater understanding of the importance of strong verbal and written communication skills. Following many discussions with fellow interns, it is apparent that S&P Capital IQ managers really desire to see their interns grow and succeed. My manager has taken a sincere interest in me and has taken time to explain our business segment’s strategic contribution and the role we play as a liaison between our clients and the numerous equity research contributors who may be accessed on our platform. She has provided sound guidance and clear instruction — challenging me to grow in my business knowledge and acquiring new skills on essential project assignments, while further developing my strengths via projects that also consider my interests; even allowing me to handle client calls. I am extremely grateful for the rich S&P Capital IQ internship experience I have been afforded. It has been an invaluable experience that will surely include many great memories. Throughout the course of this ten week internship I have been able to get a small glimpse of what a future in working with the leading financial data and analytics provider may entail. Although working in such a fast-paced environment can be taxing, the experience and knowledge gleaned is priceless. Each day offers its unique set of opportunities. It’s apparent that in order for one to succeed at S&P Capital IQ they should have the mentality of a racer, a steady pace striving for a goal, but in this case the goal is a journey that involves consistently being several steps ahead of the competition!
