Posted By: How May I Help You NC on August 27, 2012 Curricular, Operational, and Outreach Interns Unlocking Potential is a nonprofit school turnaround organization which rapidly transforms chronically underperforming urban public schools into extraordinary, high-performing, sustainable schools. Our turnaround schools ensure that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and strength of character necessary to succeed on the path to college and to achieve their full potential. UP Academy Charter School of Boston, Unlocking Potential’s first turnaround school, opened in summer 2011 as an in-district charter school. It serves amost 500 students, a significant percentage of whom previously attended the Gavin Middle School, an underperforming Boston Public School that was closed in June 2011. In summer 2012, we will launch our second turnaround middle school in Lawrence, MA. That school will serve 100 students in 6th grade in fall 2012 and more than 300 6th-8th grade students in fall 2013. In summer 2013, we will launch our first turnaround elementary school, likely in Boston, pending state approval. Role: The Curricular and Operational Interns at UP Academy holds primary responsibility for developing and implementing data systems that will be analyzed and used to change cultural and curricular practices around the school(s). The Curricular and Operational Interns will work closely with a member of the leadership team to analyze data and implement systems to improve student achievement. The Outreach Interns will manage a relationship with a specific university and develop outreach events for that university. The Outreach Interns will work closely with a member of the Talent Team to analyze data and implement systems to improve university outreach. Specific Responsibilities: A Curricular Intern will do the following: • Utilize videos of classroom instruction to analyze and coach math and science instruction to support teachers to improve their practice and dramatically increase student achievement and • Manage and oversee a school-wide mathematics fluency program to ensure effectiveness, seamless operations, and dramatic gains in student achievement. An Operational Intern will do the following: • Compile attendance, referral, suspension, merit, and demerit data for leadership team meetings; • Evaluate current systems for data collection and discern methods of making them more robust; • Create analysis protocol to measure school culture; • Create metrics by which to measure school culture, using current data systems, as well as developing and implementing new systems by which to do so; • Create a series of goals related to school culture, and measure their progress using daily and weekly student data; and • Create benchmarks to measure and evaluate school progress towards culture goals. An Outreach Intern will do the following: • Manage a relationship between a specific college site and Unlocking Potential’s Talent Team; • Develop a dynamic outreach strategy for this specific college site; • Implement the outreach strategy for the college site; • Plan outreach events at this college site; • Analyze data obtained in outreach events; and • Identify and refer strong individuals for positions within the organization. Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Viable candidates should be available to work approximately 8 hours per week. This internship meets all qualifications of Harvard Graduate School’s FEP program.
