Posted By: Pierre Johnson on October 29, 2005 26 October 2005, Paris I managed to get myself on the guest-list the other night to check out this DYN-O-MITE group, HEAVY! Before going any further, let me share something. Back in the day at SC State Univ., when I was the bass player in the group EBONY LOUNGE, talking big stuff was my hobby. I let it be known far and wide that when the LOUNGE was about to throwdown, you needed to put on your seatbelts and screw your wig on tight, 'cause we we're bringing the noise! Heck, I didn't care if Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, or even the Roots were in the audience. I'd tell them all, "...break out your pens and paper because class is about to begin.." Yes! I talked much junk, but it ain't bragging if you can back it up and we DID! ...and now back to HEAVY...hmmmm They taught me what the SHOW is all about. To give you another angle, I had a funky-GED to their FUNK Ph.D. (that's Piled High and Deep)! Trying to explain how something sounded, how the room felt, the VIBE in words is just beyond me. Here's my offering: It was like walking through the RED DOOR at Madame Zenobia's for the first time. (see Uptown Saturday Night) It was like the thrill of eating Pop-Rocks and drinking Pepsi...AT THE SAME TIME! (old school do ya hear me?) The sound was so HEAVY, I believe it could change a person's DNA. Everybody's head was bobbing and booties shaking. The group is actually a duo comprised of Casey Benjamin and Nicky Guiland (I found out later). Casey looks like a young version of that older uncle who thinks he's a Cat-Daddy. He sings and plays keys...but it's one of those keyboards that you have slund over your shoulder like a guitar. When he plays, it ain't nothing butt the truth. Nicky Guiland is the singer/dynamo. Her voice reminds me of Minnie Ripperton or Chaka Khan...but it's her own thang.. The girl rocks the stage, dancing like she is possessed...And in HIGH heels no doubt. Her moves would make Tina Turner proud (and have chiropractors grimace)!
