Oak Street Festival 5 Nov 05 (Sat)
|
Posted By: WILLIAM W. HEMMANS III on October 30, 2005 Greetings to all. I wanted to announce that the Oak Street Festival here in Waycross, GA will be starting this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The first part of the day will have many festivities such as a car show, 5 on 5 basketball tournament, various eating contests, all kinds of foods to be cooked and served, the elderly and others to be transported around, many events for youth to participate etc.etc.etc. There will even be a all female biker group consisting of 25 members up from Miami, FL. Ms. Natalie Wilson Gospel recording artist will be the main singing act Saturday night along with her group of singers and dancers. There will also be other participating singers coming from surrounding states and counties. Ms. Wilson group is called Natalie Wilson & SOP "THE GOOD LIFE" The brochure says The Girl Director and her Possee Are Back with their new album featuring hit singles "Free", "Conquerors", "Liquid Prayer", "When You Need A Friemd" and "Good Life" featuring Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins.... Many people including myself look forward with eagerness to meet all participating performers. A added inspiration for me is that my father Bill Hemmans will also be driving down from Columbia S.C. to participate by playing his saxophone who is seeking to resume his recording career. I never got a chance to experience him in concert back in the 60's and early 70's when he played with Ike and Tina Turner, Isaac Hayes and other top popular groups during those times. He has not recorded since his last hit record in the early 70's called "SummerTime". The group of people I have joined to work with has had major participation from the City of Waycross to rejuvenate the Oak Street part of town. We are all familiar with areas of town that are the roughest with an asortment of drugs, alcohol, prostitution and violence. Oak Street was once a booming black area of the community that is run down and littered. The City has done a great job to clean up trash and refurbish this area of our town that has been neglected and forsaken for years as the City of Waycross has grown. We seek to reclaim our streets and our youth. Many Churches are participating from all around. Tickets were on sale for $20-25.00. So many donations came in that the Gospel concert will be free for all. That has to be all God. A large part of the donations and the largest came from the white community and around the states. God uses whom He chooses to Bless for a great cause. I was with the the County Commissioner as we stopped by the local post office and a white man had sent $1000.00 from another state. God brought many great good things together to pull this off. We even had youths form a group called Proverbs to help out volunteering to work. They will have a lot of fun also and all staff will be wearing special T-shirts. We all will be dresing up for the concert that night. No I will not be wearing a suit, Lol! There will be security, paramedics etc. as does all major events. Many are volunteering. There will be media and radio coverage. Mrs. Monique Ward fron Chicago who had a Pharmacuetical company in Chicago is producing this event with the use of her new company called Out of the Box Promotions. I have met and worked with quite a few good people in the capacity I have volunteered. Staff will be at the site at 7 a.m. until. Of course many hours by those people have been put in from gathering donations to flying people in, hotel room accomodations, food etc. We will be doing a love offering after the Gospel Concert to expres appreciations to the performing artists. I pray all will be of great and enjoyable benefit for all, this event will continue to grow and to have lasting positive and most of all spiritual affects. I ask your well wishes and prayers if you will for such a large and positive/spiritual event for our community. Its about putting actions along with prayers and those who always have negative to say. We all have this experience. Blessings to all. Sincerely William If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
